There was no shortage of plaid in the F/W 11 collections, but we especially gravitated towards the stellar ensembles from Sonia Rykiel and Carven. The former sent an expertly layered look down the runway, which consisted of the Intarsia Leaf Sweater ($960, 617-426-2033), Large Trousers in Tartan Plaid with Fringes ($1455, 617-426-2033), and Tartan and Fox Long Plaid Scarf ($2910, 617-426-2033). We're crazy about the outfit's exaggerated silhouette, including the oversized statement scarf and roomy pants, which make for a comfortable-yet-chic option come fall. We were equally enthused when we spotted the Wrap-Around Dress in Turquoise Tartan Flannel ($1110) by Carven. With its asymmetrical hemline, generous pockets, cut-out detailing, and adorable collar, this frock certainly tops our list of must-haves this season.
Of course, the runways aren't the only places we've been seeing plaid; today's four trendsetters prove that this trend works exceptionally well off the catwalks as well. Chloe Moretz and Amber Atherton, for example, aptly demonstrated how to put a sophisticated spin on the classic pattern. The adorable Moretz attended a preview party for the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in London back in June wearing the Asymmetric Twill Tartan Dress ($1010) by Carven. The plaid print has a sophisticated feel, thanks to frock's muted color palette and interesting bodice, plus we think Moretz's sleek bun and nude shoes complement the ladylike dress perfectly. We're also smitten with the way Atherton styled her plaid piece at the opening of the Kate Spade New York store in London last month. For the event, she chose Kate Spade's Plaid Sophie Cape ($595), a Monki dress, SADO belt, Topshop shoes, and Wing Paris jewelry. Our eyes were immediately drawn to her supremely stylish choice of outerwear, which effectively punched up all-black outfit.
While Moretz and Atherton both went for glamorous looks, that's definitely not the only way to don plaid this season. For less dressy occasions, consider emulating Cara Delevingne's downtown twist or even Clara Paget's youthful take on the spotlighted pattern. The former attended Fashion's Night Out in London last month wearing Burberry Prorsum's Plaid Wool-Blend Cropped Coat ($2995) with Helmut Lang's Stretch Leather Leggings ($920), resulting in an oh-so-hip ensemble we're absolutely lusting after. We're also head-over-heels for the checkered shorts Clara Paget wore to a Havaianas party in London earlier this year. She teamed the high-waisted pair with ankle boots and a noir tank, resulting in a playfully chic outfit that's perfect for fall.
If plaid pieces are on your shopping list this season-and they certainly should be-you'll definitely want to check out our top-notch selections. If you're dying for the perfect checkered dress a la Moretz and the Carven runway, we suggest snagging Theory's Handkerchief Plaid Dress ($345), Rag & Bone's Saami Plaid Wool Shift Dress ($450) or Rails' Justine Dress in Navy Plaid ($128). Craving outerwear options like Delevingne and Atherton's chic pieces? We wholeheartedly approve of Lauren by Ralph Lauren's Stand Collar Plaid Cape ($499), Robbi & Nikki's Hooded Plaid Cape ($225), and Classiques Entier's Dvora Plaid Sleeveless Jacket ($268). Any of these options are sure to keep you both toasty and stylish-a terrific combo, if you ask us! Finally, if you're in the market for tartan shorts similar to Paget's, we recommend picking up Moon Collection's Plaid to Have Found You Shorts ($45) or Aqua's Plaid Shorts ($58). Either pair can be teamed with tights and boots when chilly weather hits, making them a versatile, year-round choice!-Erin Fitzpatrick
