While there were oversized pants aplenty on the runways this season, we're absolutely mad about the voluminous white trousers we saw at Yves Saint Laurent. While the early part of Stefano Pilati's F/W 11 collection was reminiscent of the swinging sixties with mod-inspired silhouettes, the latter was clearly an ode to the late seventies with slinky white jumpsuits and sultry dresses. In the look above, Pilati combined the Wide Leg Palazzo Pants ($1490, 212.980.2970) in White Crepe Satin with the White Silk Chiffon with Satin Detail Blouse ($1790, 212.980.2970) and the White Organza Coat with Feathers ($30550, 212.980.2970) for a high-glam ensemble fit for a modern-day Bianca Jagger. Additionally, we are quite fond of the low-slung, suede baggy Pants ($4495, 323.602.0000) from the Chloe F/W 11 show (shown above), especially the way designer Hannah MacGibbon paired them with the Wool Jacquard Pullover ($1355) for a luxurious, slightly seventies look.
Happily, this trend translates off the runways too! As today's quartet of stylish celebs demonstrate, one of the great things about oversized pants is that they come in a variety of colors, styles, and textures, making them a fitting choice for a slew of events. For example, Charlize Theron opted for a gray houndstooth pair-specifically the Durbyfield Trousers ($1400, 617.262.6100) from Roland Mouret's F/W 11 collection-for the GQ Men of the Year awards in London early last month. Though the menswear-inspired, wide-leg pants are an unexpected choice for the red carpet event, her sultry silk halter top (the Squeers Carre Top ($1080, 617.262.6100), also by Mouret), adds some femininity to the outfit, resulting in a seriously chic evening look. We also approve of the oversized palazzo pants Rachel Zoe wore to her S/S 12 presentation during NYFW last month. The black chiffon fabric makes the luxe ultra-wide-leg trousers (a covetable piece from her S/S 12 collection) a dressier pick, for sure.
In addition to both of those stellar selections, we also appreciate silky interpretations of this trend a la Poppy Delevingne and Jenna Lyons. The former constructed a glamorous daytime outfit during London Fashion Week last month, comprised of a pair of Jonathan Saunders gold trousers and semi-sheer top with Topshop peep-toe heels, a Meli Melo chain-strap bag, and oversized Dior sunglasses. Lyons, on the other hand, went for a more casual look with her silky wide-leg pants. We spotted J. Crew's President and Creative Director front row at the Derek Lam S/S 12 show last month and couldn't help but notice her nonchalant ensemble, which was comprised of a pair of Celine trousers from the S/S 11 collection, styled with a burnout tee, chunky knit sweater, and brown boots. We love Lyons' relaxed take on the trend, which not only works well for fashion soirees, but is also great for weekend events or relaxed dinner parties.
With today's inspirational looks in mind, we set out to find the best of the best in oversized pants to ensure your fall wardrobe is stocked with chic options. It should come as no surprise that we're crazy for Zara's Culottes ($60) and Palazzo Trousers ($60); both are simple-yet-chic styles that would look great paired with a button-up blouse for the office. Want something in a bright color or interesting print instead? Then be sure to pick up either Kimchi Blue's Opaque Wide-Leg Pants ($49), Topshop's Floral Wide Leg Trousers ($40), or Edme & Esylite's Aniseed Wide-Leg Pants ($148) to guarantee a show-stopping ensemble this season. We also approve of Free People's rust-colored Velvet Extreme Wideleg Pants ($168), the warm, neutral hue of Alice + Olvia's Eric Wide-Leg Pants ($297) in Camel, and Young Fabulous and Broke's Palazzo Silk Wide-Leg Pants ($275), which would work for both daytime and evening occasions. Finally, if you feel like splurging, we'd like to direct you to Tory Burch's McFall Pants ($525), which come in two eye-catching prints and the ultra-sophisticated Pleated Wide-Leg Pants ($575) by Theyskens' Theory. Whatever pair/pairs you choose to sport this season, just be sure to keep your look balanced by teaming your oversized pants with a understated or feminine top.-Jessica Baker
