We first spotted the macro-moto on the Twenty8Twelve S/S 10 runways draped over lingerie-inspired ensembles, and since then we've seen a preponderance of loose and luxurious leather jackets on some of our favorite trendsetting ladies. Just check out our fashion-forward foursome for some key dressing tips and do as they do (remember, imitation is the highest form of flattery!). Let's start with the lovely Lawren Howell, Vogue's West Coast Fashion Editor, seen here at the Quicktake: Rodarte exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum during NYFW (above, second from left). By pairing her Proenza Schouler Leather Jacket ($2150) with Rodarte's Brushed Mohair Pleated Skirt (from the Fall 09 collection), the elegant editor proved that playing with proportion and texture is a smart styling strategy. Another excellent example of how to wear this piece comes via another editorial insider, Kate Lanphear (far right), who was spotted at Marc Jacob's F/W 10 runway show wearing her take on the trend. Elle's Style Director, who is known for combining high-end pieces with vintage fare, opted for an oversized Hussein Chalayan coat with her signature black skinnies and Iron Maiden tee. The slim silhouette of Lanphear's pants tempers her bigger boxy biker jacket¬--make sure to keep that in mind when mimicking this masterful mix.
Layering this oversized outerwear over your favorite closet staples is also another way to incorporate the macro-moto into your wardrobe rotation. Just take a cue from former GOTM, Alice Dellal (far left) who wore her vintage biker over a button-up shirt and sweater backstage at Lacoste's F/W 10 presentation. (Extra points for those of you who add a little flare with band buttons a la Dellal!) Likewise, be sure to consider Alexandra Richards' high-low combo as a cheat sheet for looking chic (second from right). While attending a Shakira-hosted Rolling Stone event, the British-born model wisely grounded a glitzy Versace mini dress with a gritty Topshop jacket and treasured hoodie, creating an outstanding girly-yet-grungy vibe.
Now that you know how these fashion plates are putting together this look, we hope you'll consider some of our favorite finds! For a few must-have alternates, try Rag and Bone's Bowery Jacket ($1495), R13's Motorcycle Jacket ($1346), Diane von Furstenberg's Motorcycle Jacket ($745), or DKNY's Leather Motorcycle Jacket ($695). Of course you don't need to break the bank to achieve this insouciant style; for more affordable versions, just check out Hurley's The Bowery Leather Jacket ($202), ASOS' Leather Quilted Biker Jacket ($188), or Steve Madden's Asymmetrical Zip Motorcycle Jacket ($68). All of these options are cut larger and looser than your standard cropped coat, but if you want, feel free to go up a size to get this season's most in-demand outerwear!¬--KM
