Ice Skating Skirts
As we're sure you can tell, the ice skating skirt is similar to the full skirt we called out as one of the season's key items. Seen above on Peaches Geldof, Molly Sims, and Ashley Olsen (as well as on the Sophia Kokosalaki and Missoni runways), the ice skating skirt is typified by having a more voluminous silhouette than the full skirt and a hemline that hits above the knee. In particular, this trend is perfect for our shorter readers, as it allows you to wear the full skirt style without looking dowdy.
Right now you'll want to wear them with your faithful, black, opaque tights and a fantastic belt, a la Olsen, will highlighted your waist. If you fear jumping on the bandwagon, only to be stuck with a very seasonal item, we assure you that the ice skating skirt has some longevity. There were similarly shaped skirts on the Spring 08 runways of Proenza Schouler and Donna Karan.
There are a wide range of skirts in this style available now, from Topshop's faux leather Swing Skirt ($60) to Derek Lam's Flippy Felt Skirt ($1250) that's straight off the runway. Alexander Wang makes a high-waisted Herringbone Skirt ($439) we're crazy about while BCBG Max Azria's Kailin Sateen Skirt ($138) is a fantastic foundation piece (it's basic enough that you can easily dress it up or down). A slightly more structured variation of this look can be found via Theory's Liddy Skirt ($235), it's a metallic mini that's quite festive for the holidays. Another swell party option comes courtesy of Conspicuous, their Metallic Box Pleat Miniskirt ($157) has a nice touch of glitz that's not too sparkly.
