Field Jackets

Field Jackets
Monday, April, 05, 2010 Attention, dear readers! This season, drab is directional thanks decidedly chic combat-ready collections from Balmain's Christophe Decarnin and Marc Jacobs. When these two industry heavy-hitters both showed military-inspired looks on their S/S 10 runways, we knew it was only a matter of time before the army coat blitz began. Like clockwork, our favorite clothing-minded celebs have fallen in line and we've fallen in love with their styling selections! And while we've spotlighted our favorites flak jackets that will help you get the look, we also wanted to show you how some of our favorite well-dressed all-stars are incorporating this spring's key outerwear option in today's Trend Report feature!

Although Decarnin showed strong-shouldered camo coats paired with tough-chic leather pants at Balmain, and Marc Jacobs layered his army jacket with romantically ruffled dresses for his eponymous label, our famous foursome opted for more low-key looks. Each one of our fashion-forward femmes employed a smart dressing strategy by combining their field jackets with black or neutral bottoms¬--so remember to break out your rations of second-skin liquid leggings (a la Whitney Port and Kate Moss) or dark hued harem pants (see Rachel Bilson and Gwen Stefani) this spring! And when it gets warmer, this piece will be the perfect transitional garment to layer over your must-have printed dresses and adorable skirts this summer!

Now onto today's subjects! Seen marching around the West Village in New York, The City's Whitney Port dressed down in Alice + Olivia's Leather Combo Leggings ($330) and rag & bone's M-15 Field Coat ($595, 212.753.7300) in Army Green; check out her exact piece or try the brand's Ohara Cargo Jacket ($520). Rachel Bilson, spotted in Beverly Hills, also styled her GapKid's Boys Military Jacket ($33) with a bundled up scarf, while Kate Moss opted for PRPS' Military Jacket with Fur Trim Collar ($860, 310.276.4400) to take a walk in North London early last month. Gwen Stefani rocked this style¬--specifically a G-Star Raw jacket from the F/W 09 season¬--to the park with her family, proving that the multi-tasking mom is prepared for rain (waterproof boots) and shine (sunglasses)!

Now that you have been briefed on the who and the what, let's get into the wear! If it's a roomier relaxed fit you seek, be sure to check out Smythe's Summer Surplus Jacket ($650), Free People's Benji Desert Cargo Jacket ($138), or Ecote's Surplus Jacket ($78) for a few slouchy selections. If a slimmer style is more your speed, let us direct you to Theory's Twill Jacket ($315), Levi's Army Camo Jacket ($223), or Topshop's Army Jacket ($100). Finally, if you're on a mission for a cropped coat¬--which would look swell with a flirty floral frock or skinny pants this spring¬--we can recommend Of Two Minds' Reconstructed Army Jacket ($322) or Ecote's Cropped Surplus Jacket ($68).
