We've been innundated with cropped swing coats and noticed an abundance of Rick Owens-esque little leathers, but now we're seeing a new trend about town-the double-breasted jacket. It seems a certain chic set of gals are wearing this new spin on an old classic. The double-breasted jacket-we say jacket, not coat, due in part to the shorter length-has more innovative, fitted, and feminine cuts than your traditional J. Crew-style peacoat.
Sure, the double-breasted is popping up on celebs galore, but of all the ways we've seen this look (belted, open, long) we like the cropped or hip-length double-breasted jacket best. While the spring runway showed some standout jackets in standout fabrics (like the silver Marc Jacobs jacket, above), in the real world, most folks choose classic black or gray. We think Mischa (above, far right) does a fine job of exemplifying this trend by pairing her cropped jacket with a long, bold blue top and slim-fitting gray jeans. Juicy Couture makes a version of her piece for $275, currently at www.ronherman.com. For a high-end piece, we covet this cream leather Burberry Prorsum jacket, seen above, about $2,000, available at www.matchesfashion.com.
