How to Break Into the Fashion Industry

Caitie Schlisserman

Days filled with celebrity clients, gorgeous clothes, lots of travel, and front-row seats at fashion shows—that’s the glamorous life of an in-demand stylist, right? On its surface, it sounds like the ultimate career, but as with any other coveted job, the perks don’t come without hard work—and lots of it. Need proof? SOREL recently caught up with Marie Claire senior fashion editor Zanna Roberts Rassi and quizzed her about the ins and outs of being a stylist. “In my world, no two days are ever the same,” she tells us. “It changes daily, and I’m very grateful for that.”

While Rassi loves what she does for a living, it’s definitely a tough gig and breaking into the industry is equally as hard. “Everyone starts off in their career [with very little] real-life experience, so having a mentor is essential,” says Rassi, who recently finished mentoring an aspiring stylist, Grace Rosson, as part of the #SORELStyle program. And Rosson’s not the only one with access to Rassi’s endless wisdom: The stylist offered SOREL a behind-the-scenes look at a day on the job with some tips on how to break into the covetable industry, and we're giving you a sneak peek!
