Heidi Klum, Alexandra Richards, Frankie Rayder
It is hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us, but Thanksgiving is merely ten days away! While this time of year brings lots of goodies (food, vacation, gifts), it also presents a profusion of added stress (full social calendar, airport security, relatives). Instead of succumbing to this seasonal anxiety by neglecting your personal appearance, we say, take advantage of the extra opportunities to show off your style! In today's story, we detail some fresh tips for you to apply to the outfits you wear to all upcoming parties and family gatherings.
1. Swap out your skinny jeans for slim black trousers.
The widely adored supermodel, Heidi Klum, certainly knows how to travel chicly. We spotted the Project Runway queen earlier this month at LAX in a graphic Modern Lovers Top Cat Tee ($45), a Ron Herman Cropped Cashmere Cardigan ($276), and Christian Louboutin Alti Booties ($1195, 310.247.9300). Klum also stayed airport appropriate in Von Zipper Alotta Sunglasses ($129), Faliero Sarti's Pedro Scarf ($552) and a Jimmy Choo Croc Bari Bag ($28000, 310.860.9045). We are charmed by her entire ensemble, but want to take a moment to hone in on her fantastic Cotton Satine Trousers ($650) from Christian Siriano's F/W 08 Collection. We don't foresee skinny jeans going out of style anytime soon, but now is the time to explore swapping them out with slim black trousers for a more sophisticated look. You¬'ll be in good company: Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, and Jil Sander are just a few of the designers who highlighted these slender pants in their fall collections. To get in on this trend, invest in some of our favorite pairs including Banana Republic's BR Monogram Cigarette Pants ($175), Topshop's Tux Delux Skinny Trousers ($80), and Alice + Olivia's Wide Waistband Skinny Pants ($242). Wear them with Urban Outfitters' Cat Cat Crew Tee ($20), Hartford's Cashmere Scarf ($278), Forever 21's Carson Ankle Booties ($29)and Big Buddha's Union BucketBag ($64) for a winning take on Klum's travel ensemble!
2. Break out (or fake out) over-the-knee boots.
Not only is Alexandra Richards always a beacon of style (Exhibit A: NY Fashion Week), but she keeps us on her toes with her innovative wardrobe ideas. Considering this, it isn't surprising that Richards played muse for our November Tips by wearing some over-the-knee Gucci boots with American Apparel's Shiny Leggings ($42) in Lam√© Matte Black, a Balenciaga blazer, and a Treesje Avalon Bag ($595) to Lucky Magazine's 5th Annual Lucky Shops Event earlier this month. We have been advocating over-the-knee boots since our fall preview, so now is definitely the time to break out yours, if you have them. However, if you¬'d rather skip out on investing in a new trendy pair, but still want to simulate the style, we have a simple suggestion. You can achieve the look of the season¬'s must-have footwear simply by wearing a pair of ultra-high socks (in the same color as your boot of choice) with your older knee-high boots! There are lots of options either way: for socks we like the over-the-knee versions by Falke ($49), Free People ($28), or American Apparel ($13) and for boots we suggest checking out the over-the-knee styles from Alloy ($40), Chinese Laundry ($100), Nine West ($189), and Report Signature ($450).
3. Mix shiny pieces with grunge basics.
We are not sure how Frankie Rayder managed to stay under our radar (no pun intended) this long, but believe it or not, this is her WWW debut! Just a few weeks ago, she wore some very tip-worthy attire while shopping at Decades (one of our beloved local vintage boutiques!) with Kate Moss (what a powerhouse duo) in Los Angeles. Rayder wore a punky graphic tee with gladiator sandals and an exceptional metallic mini-skirt that makes us all ooh and aah. After observing Rayder's getup, we immediately knew that mixing shiny pieces with grunge basics would be our final pointer for the day. The fusion is quite awesome and the runways (chiefly, Balmain) support this style, too. For a look like Rayder's, you can wear Delia's Back to the Future T-Shirt ($25) or Urban Outfitters' Metal Forever T-Shirt ($32) with Forever 21's Sequin Mini Skirt ($20) or Delia's Izzy Skirt ($40), and your preferred pair of gladiator sandals. Taking note of Rayder's Chanel bag brings us to two important closing points: 1. Metallic pieces look even more fabulous next to patent. 2. There are a few weeks left to enter to win the ah-mazing chain-strap Chanel purse we're giving away, so sign up (or send to your friends) today!¬--Jessica Amento
