The art of putting together chic, cool weather outfits is underrated. It seems simple enough-take outfit, add layers for warmth, and go-but it's difficult to get the balance correct and not look sloppy. Today we're showcasing a few lovely ladies who have figured out how to blend sensible pieces with stylish elements.
The reason why these ensembles work boils down to two key things: great outerwear and thoughtful accessories. Obviously a fantastic coat or jacket is important, since this is the main focus of the whole look, but don't forget to add interesting details in the rest of your outfit. This can be accomplished with a fantastic pair of boots, beautiful scarf, or a colorful bag.
Ashley Olsen wore a shrunken Balenciaga blazer to the Los Angeles opening of Kiki de Montparnasse layered over a gray, hooded, cashmere sweater. The deeply saturated shade of violet was an unusual, and gorgeous, choice. Rachel Bilson, seen above waiting in line at LAX, showed that you don't have to be tall to wear a long coat. Her olive-colored duster works because it's a slim cut and not in a bulky fabric and perfectly shows off her easy-going style.
Kate Moss played up the tan she recently acquired in Mexico by wearing a white furry coat. Her gray bag pops against the snowy coat, while the rest of the outfit keeps our attention thanks to the over-the-knee boots. Finally, Keira Knightly wore a classic, military-inspired, double-breasted coat in an unexpected army green. We like the juxtaposition of her animal print scarf with the masculine lines of the coat.
