Cold Weather Chic
There's something about cold weather that evokes happy-go-lucky sentiments in us all, as it brings lots of lovely activities to mind: sipping hot chocolate, relaxing by the fireplace, even just watching a glistening snow fall! A less-picturesque aspect of wintry climates is the sight of oneself in the mirror, looking like a marshmallow on account of improperly-styled winter apparel. This situation, along with a few other seasonal-related fashion dilemmas (over-accessorizing, bland color combos) are common pitfalls to fall into around this time of year, because the colder the weather gets, the trickier it is to stay chic.
However, all is not lost, dear readers! Take for instance, the snug outfit Kate Hudson wore on a coffee run in New York City earlier this month. She stayed quite stylish by layering a Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Belted Boho Cardi ($328, 310.385.0557) over a chunky neutral turtleneck, pale leggings, and Loeffler Randall boots. Hudson earned fashion kudos, thanks her sweater's funky seventies vibe and tan footwear selection (in lieu of predictable black boots). Chloe Sevigny also opted for unexpected shoes for her cold weather ensemble. While running errands in Soho, the Big Love actress wore some heeled red Dr. Martens Boots ($110) that accentuated her vintage red beanie (try Capelli's New York Chunky Knit Beanie ($11) as an alternative) and oversized, toggle-embellished leather coat. When choosing winter outerwear, it's important to pick something with deep pockets (like Sevigny's) to keep your hands warm!
Since we can always count on Agyness Deyn to charm us with her innovative getups, we turned to her, once again, for guidance today! The bona-fide supermodel reminded us how fabulous uncommon fabrics can be by wearing a large corduroy jacket while walking her dog in NYC a few weeks ago. Deyn made her outfit even more interesting by sporting some bright red jeans (perhaps recycled from last spring's colored denim craze?), patent lace-up boots, and a cossack-style hat. If you are looking for a more classic look,, consider the cozy and chic outfit that we spotted on Blake Lively. While filming earlier this month, the Gossip Girl looked dapper in a slate blue Alberta Ferretti Coat ($3635, 212.632.9300), JBrand Skinny Jeans ($160), Delman Giddyup Boots ($290), and Bryna Nicole Loyola Satchel ($320).
Our final inspiration today is courtesy of the au courant getup that Kirsten Dunst recently displayed in Soho. Dunst mixed patterns to an alluring degree by wearing her checkered Opening Ceremony All-Occasion Cardigan ($300, 310.652.1120) with a floral printed skirt. While black tights will never go out of style, it's refreshing to see Dunst keep her legs warm with a gray pair. We can also learn from her preference for an across-body bag, because it leaves your hands free to be cozily-tucked in your pockets!-Jessica Amento
