SPF Protection For Your Face

SPF Protection For Your Face
Tuesday, June, 26, 2012 After a not-at-all scientific poll of the Who What Wear office, we've narrowed down our favorite sunscreens to the tubes and bottles pictured above. While some of us embrace the pale and others can't help but spend a day in the sun, we're all devoted sunscreen wearers, so whichever category you fall into, there's a winning formula above.

For tips on proper application, however, we consulted an expert. Doctor Francesa Fusco, a medical and cosmetic dermatologist at Dr. Patricia Wexler's office in New York, says the most common mistake is not using enough sunscreen. When she says to cover your body from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, she means it. "Apply it to the scalp," she insists. "Get a spray sunscreen, spray it on a wedge-one of those foamy wedges used for makeup-and rub it along the scalp. Don't forget the ears and back of neck." Once you reach your face, "Apply a marble-sized amount, really getting as close to the hairline as you can," Dr. Fusco says. "I have a special light in my office so that I can see where you've distributed the sunscreen; most people don't get it close enough to the hairline." And of course, the magic word when it comes to sunscreen: reapply. At this point, you should know to reapply post-swim, but don't forget about your face. "It's important to reapply in those areas, especially along the mouth and under the nose," says Dr. Fusco.

The one thing you shouldn't do, however, is rub anything onto your eyelids. The chemicals will soak through and onto your actual eyeballs. So wear sunglasses, and if you're really worried about burning your lids, brush on a mineral powder with SPF, like Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral Powder SPF 45 ($30).
