Could This New Shoe Trend Make You Ditch Last Year's Sandals?

Hilary George-Parkin

The past few seasons have been a golden age of simple, sensible footwear—block-heel mules, shower slides, and unadorned sandals. You'd be hard-pressed to find a brand that hasn't taken a page from the design playbook of Maryam Nassir Zadeh, the reigning queen of stylish, minimal shoes. But lately, another trend has been dominating the New Arrivals tabs of our favorite retailers—and it's pretty much the polar opposite of "less is more."

Feathers, pom-poms, blingy crystals, tassels, and fringe—no embellishment is too extra for the sandals we're seeing for summer '17. The muted hues we've grown to love are now sharing shelf space with fuchsias, metallics, and electric blues. And who's to blame for this newfound exuberance? Well, Miuccia Prada certainly has something to do with it. Miu Miu's offerings for spring are more off-the-wall than ever (think faux-fur Muppet slides plumed with feathers and covered in chunky jewels), while Prada's feature feathers and rubber flower appliqués. Fast-fashion retailers have taken notice, too: At Zara, you can snag sequined espadrilles and bedazzled mules for less than $50 a pop.

And while it may be tempting to save these shoes for special occasions, in many cases, they look just as good—if not better—paired with your go-to jeans and a tee.

Below, shop 18 pairs of maximalist sandals guaranteed to inject some life into your summer wardrobe.
