As a born-and-raised Angeleno accustomed to nearly year-round warm weather, Aimee Song possesses that innate sense of style--relaxed and a touch nonchalant--perfected by so many Californians. But though her repertoire consists of plenty of half-tucked shirts, cool jeans, and slouchy silhouettes, she's not quite the typical Los Angeles fashionphile. The Song of Style blogger, who also works full-time as an interior designer, has acquired a cosmopolitan edge over time thanks to her frequent international travels. Taking a cue from icons like Vogue Paris editor Emmanuelle Alt, Song's outfits often possess a distinctly French allure: tailored shirts with ultra-skinny pants or a Isabel Marant-esque striped turtleneck toughened up with a biker jacket, usually paired with feminine, pointy-toe shoes. When she isn't channeling a Parisian chic aesthetic, Song's also a fan of experimenting with colors, prints, and textures, resulting in a playful look that's her own personal spin on California cool. Q&A with Aimee Song
Please describe your personal style in two sentences or less.
My style is a mixture of a lot of things but never just one thing. It can be feminine but I'll add a little edginess to it or sometimes it's rocker chic but a more cleaned-up version. Overall though, I always add a bit of Californian-ness to it since, after all, I was born and raised in Los Angeles.
How does the city you live in inspire your day-to-day style?
Although I'm more known as a fashion blogger, I work full-time as an interior designer. Sometimes, I'll go to client meetings and on the same day I'll be at the job site with 20 different construction workers, so my outfits have to be not only practical but able to have different functions. Most of my outfits on my blog, I wear from morning to the time I come home, with the occasional shoe changes. Also, traveling a lot to different cities and countries, and living in San Francisco for a couple of years, has taught me how to layer.
List some of your favorite current trends and why you appreciate them/how you are wearing them.
I'm not really a minimalist but all these designers coming out with clean lines, and simple yet strong silhouettes with minimal use of color (or the lack of), has inspired me to dress simply. For example, Saint Laurent's show was dominated by black and white with blouses, tuxedo pants, and big hats. I normally wear my big floppy hats and fedoras with lighter casual outfits such as dresses and jeans, but I'm planning to pair them with dress suits.
Who are some of your style icons and why?
My style icons change from time to time but at the moment I love how simple yet chic Emmanuelle Alt dresses. I also love the way Miroslava Duma mixes and matches styles. Rihanna's street style is another favorite of mine lately. I love the way she incorporates designer pieces into her daily life yet makes them look so street chic.
Name one go-to piece in your closet and why.
I'm not really a purse person but I have to give it to my Givenchy Antigona bag, which I carry almost every day. It really goes with almost every outfit of mine, holds so much, and yet still looks as if I had just bought it.
What are some of your favorite places to shop?
I mainly shop online as I usually don't have time to shop in stores. My go-to online shops are Shopbop, Net-a-Porter, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Zara, H&M, Topshop, and Madewell.
