If there's one thing we've noticed from keeping a close eye on Sobieski's sartorial endeavors as of late, it's that basic wardrobe staples play a major role in both her casual and after-hours ensembles. For example, the actress was snapped in New York last month wearing a simple white t-shirt in a subtly nuanced way. Instead of styling it with cutoffs or casual shorts and flip-flops, she tucked it into a Christina Lehr striped skirt, added a vintage denim vest, and finished the look with Balenciaga laceless brogues (far right). We are particularly fans of her denim vest, which gives the outfit a cool, '90s vibe we adore.
Now, Sobieski doesn't just reserve fuss-free tees for daytime outings only! On a few different occasions, we've come across the actress incorporating these easygoing tops into her evening attire as well. For example, late last year Sobieski attended a dinner hosted by AnOther magazine in New York wearing American Apparel's Poly-Cotton Short Sleeve Crew Neck ($20) in Asphalt with a pair of slim Levi's jeans and strappy Balenciaga heels (bottom row, left). The resulting outfit is understated, yet stylish--thanks, in part, to those gorgeous shoes--and we appreciate the fact that Sobieski didn't feel the need to over-accessorize her outfit. A few months later, at an after-party feting husband Adam Kimmel's F/W 11 collection, she turned up in another basic American Apparel t-shirt, this time a bright red one, which she dressed up with a white vintage skirt and red Emilio Pucci heels for a very stylish result (top row, right). We also approve of the way she constructed a smart transitional outfit to celebrate the Adam Kimmel x Carharrtt collection in New York last month. Sobieski styled a striped, long-sleeve crop t-shirt--Opening Ceremony's Cropped Mock Neck Shirt ($77) to be exact--with a pair of gray THOMSEN shorts and nude Givenchy sandals (top row, left).
Of course t-shirts aren't the only items hanging in our style subject's closet. At a screening of La Dolce Vita in New York earlier this summer, Sobieski opted for a pleated frock by Versus, which she wore with Charlotte Olympia heels and a Gucci long-strap purse (bottom row, left). We like that she went for something a little more playful and girly for the evening, demonstrating she can pull of a range of looks. Plus, we're mad about the bright yellow hue, which is a refreshing and appropriate color choice for the season.
If you too are impressed with Sobieski's stylish selections, we'd like to help you pick up a few of the essentials. First, you'll want to stock up on a few basic t-shirts, like T by Alexander Wang's Scoopneck Tee ($74), American Apparel's Baby Ribi Basic Short Sleeve T ($15) in Red and Fine Jersey Long Sleeve T ($20) in White, and Loft's Shoulder Button Long Sleeve Pullover ($49.50). If you're looking to execute one of Sobieski's more casual outfits, simply team any of those options with a striped skirt, like Forever 21's Striped Bodycon Skirt ($14) or Chinti and Parker's Striped Organic Cotton Skirt ($140), and J. Crew's Denim Vest ($98) in Workwear Wash. Those who are looking to mimic Sobieski's after-hours ensembles instead should invest in high-waisted shorts, like Rag & Bone's Bart Shorts ($220), or style your t-shirt tucked in to a pair of slim jeans, like J Brand's 10 Skinny Jeans ($169) or Forever 21's Classic Skinny Jeans ($25) in Dark Denim. As for your shoes, we recommend trying Lauren Ralph Lauren's Florissa T-Strap Sandals ($65) or Martinez Valero's Heaven Ankle-Strap Sandals ($139) to give your outfit a chic finish. Finally, if it's Sobieski's sunny frock you're after, we suggest picking up ASOS' Ponti Fit and Flare Dress ($82), which has a similar bright yellow hue and pleated skirt, and then add DV by Dolce Vita's Florence Open-Toe Espadrilles ($45).--Jessica Baker
