Though we don't consider ourselves cinephiles--we like campy flicks a little too much for that--we are definitely connoisseurs when it comes to appreciating fashionable rising stars. As such, you can imagine our delight in the recent surge of fresh-faced young actresses taking center stage in Hollywood, as they are both wildly talented and incredibly well dressed. First we were captivated by Jennifer Lawrence, and her chilling performance in Winter's Bone, then we fell for Elle Fanning, thanks to her breakout role in Somewhere, and now, we find ourselves captivated by the truly adorable Hailee Steinfeld. While this fourteen-year-old leading lady has already proven herself on the silver screen--she received a slew of prestigious nominations for her role as the strong-willed Mattie Ross in True Grit--she's also garnered plenty of rave reviews for her sophisticated and smart fashion choices! Consistently turned out in stellar red-carpet looks that are both memorable and fashion-forward, we knew Steinfeld would be the perfect subject for this month's Style Spotlight.
&isBigImagOne of things we appreciate most about Steinfeld's sensibilities is that even though she's a teenager, she doesn't dress in an adolescent way. By picking sophisticated and modest pieces with a touch or whimsy or humor, she manages to look chic, yet totally appropriate for her age too. For example, Steinfeld selected an embellished and embroidered Miu Miu dress and a black satin pair of Jimmy Choo Cosmic Platform Pumps ($695) for her appearance at the BAFTA Awards in London early last month (bottom row, far left). Though the calf-grazing peplum frock has a conservative hemline, the top half of her look is definitely intriguing and a bit daring, thanks to the jewel-embellished sheer bodice. Also worth noting: Steinfeld's bright purple Miu Miu clutch. That pop of color makes the entire ensemble a bit more youthful.
Just a few weeks ago at the Miu Miu F/W 11 show in Paris, we spotted Steinfeld in another thoughtfully constructed ensemble, this time a blush pink long sleeve dress, Black Multi-Strap Leather Pumps ($950, select Miu Miu boutiques), and a Leopard-Print Calf Hair Clutch ($1350)--all by Miu Miu (bottom row, middle). By incorporating the animal-print accent and black strappy heels into the mix, Steinfeld gave her demure dress an edgy twist--a smart styling choice indeed! But that's not the only streamlined frock in our subject's wardrobe. Late last year, Steinfeld showed up at ELLE's 17th Annual Women in Hollywood Tribute wearing a charcoal gray Calvin Klein Collection shift dress from F/W 10 (top row, right). She complemented the frock's simple silhouette with natural makeup and a classic ponytail, resulting in a clean and crisp look.
Of course Steinfeld's sartorial endeavors don't only include modest, ladylike ensembles! Like most young women, this actress also has an appreciation for fun and flirty party dresses. Case in point: the 3.1 Phillip Lim Silk Flower-Embellished Dress ($875) she wore to the 19th Annual BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards late last year (bottom row, right). The delicate frock is perfect on her, and the minimal accessories--a pair of black pumps and small Lexi clutch--give the whole look a polished finish. We also noticed Steinfeld's fondness for girlish accents at last month's Fourth Annual Women in Film Pre-Oscar party. The actress selected a swingy black and beige Vionnet Dress ($2001, 212.753.7300) from the S/S 11 collection (top row, far left), which featured a darling ruffled hemline, and accessorized with a white flower brooch and Aldo's Hoxworth Mary Jane Pumps ($60) for an oh-so sweet look we love.
Whimsical dresses aside, we also love that our style subject is willing to take risks with bold, straight-off-the-runway pieces. We were thrilled to see that Steinfeld wore Miu Miu's Swan Print Raso Silk Dress $2570, select Miu Miu boutiques) to the Berlin premiere of True Grit early last month (top row, middle). Though the swan print and intriguing blocks of color make for a daring and unexpected red-carpet choice, Steinfeld pulled the look off with ease. And while Steinfeld often goes for a neutral color palette, she's not one to shy away from ultra-bright, neon hues. Take, for example, the eye-popping, multi-colored frock she wore to the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (far right) early last month. Steinfeld wowed us in a striped dress from Prada's S/S 11 collection, and we appreciate that she kept the rest of her look very understated and accessorized with just one hot-pink ring. The vibrant frock made for the perfect standout ensemble.
If you are feeling inspired by Steinfeld's fashion choices, you're in luck because we've sourced some amazing pieces that will help you create your own version of her standout ensembles. We think many of the more conservative pieces Steinfeld wears are great options for the office, especially her Calvin Klein Collection shift dress. Since that exact piece is no longer available, we suggest taking a look at Calvin Klein's Pocket Shift Dress ($128) or Theory's Betty Dress ($285). If you're looking for an outfit that can take you from day to night without skipping a beat, try something similar to her embellished Miu Miu dress. ASOS' Jet Beaded Embellished Crop Top ($63) styled with Reiss' Cori Mid Calf Skirt ($155) will certainly fit the bill and give you a sophisticated and chic look. For those of you who prefer our spotlighted star's blush pink Miu Miu dress instead, take a peek at ASOS' Pleated Long Shift Dress ($72); it's an excellent alternative worth checking out. Just be sure to accessorize the neutral frock with Lauren Merkin's Caroline Crepe de Chine Flap Clutch ($124) in Leopard to liven up your ensemble.
If you're in the market for something similar to Steinfeld's party-perfect pieces, we have a few of those as well. We're quite fond of Delia's Chiffon Bubble Dress ($50), which is a spot-on alternative to our subject's 3.1 Phillip Lim frock. For a clean and polished ensemble, style said dress with a simple pair of black pumps, like Steve Madden's Trinitie Suede Platforms ($79). If that particular style doesn't work for your tastes, you can always try something a little less restricting, like Mod Cloth's Aim High Dress ($48). Just remember to follow Steinfeld's lead and add some girly accents; her exact Aldo Mary Jane heels and Anthroplogie's Corsage Bouquet Brooches ($74) will certainly do the trick!
The next and final step towards completing your Steinfeld-inspired wardrobe is to round up a few eye-catching pieces: we're talking about bold prints and intriguing color block frocks! Splendid's Rugby Stripe Maxi Dress ($108) and ASOS' Stripe Tank Maxi Dress ($72) are not only similar to her striking Prada pick, they're also slightly more casual, making them a great option for an afternoon BBQ or a day by the pool. Last, but certainly not least, we suggest you check out Warehouse's Color Block Long Sleeve Dress ($126). Though it doesn't have a swan print, its silky fabric and intriguing mix of color are reminiscent of the Miu Miu dress, so we're certain it's a prime pick for your next evening fete!--Jessica Baker
