We noticed gladiator sandals dancing on the edge of our style¬'s peripheral vision in 2005. Assuming this was some delayed Russell Crowe/Maximus phenomenon, we abstained from purchasing as we thought they were just a sartorial one-off¬--the footwear equivalent to the Louis Vuitton Murakami Speedy. Yet much like teenagers in 7/11 parking lots, gladiator sandals are still loitering around town.
Back in 2005, Daria Werbowy and Naomi Campbell were the first gals we noticed wearing the Roman-style shoes. Imitation of Christ designer Tara Subkoff showed her version of gladiators¬--made through a collaboration with Easy Spirit¬--for her Spring 05 collection (above, on Lindsay Lohan). Celebs like Nicole Richie (above, in Azzedine Alaia) strapped them on in 2006 after the shoes reappeared during S/S collections. Two years later, we¬'re still seeing them on people like Sienna Miller (above, in Miu Miu). Daria¬'s still keeping the spirit alive by telling the March issue of British Vogue that the shoes she most wants to buy this spring are a a pair of Tod¬'s gladiator sandals¬--naturally.
While we personally feel like we missed the boat and the tipping point on this shoe, there are still scores of gladiator sandals available this spring. The following are some of our favorites (from left to right) complete with stockist information.
Balenciaga, $1295, available in select colors at Barneys, Maxfield LA, or through the store locator at www.balenciaga.com.
Jeffery Campbell, $98, available at www.urbanoutfitters.com. They¬'re a dead ringer for a pair of Chanel shoes that Linsday has worn in gold, at a fraction of the price.
Mia (Athena style), $74, available at www.zappos.com.
Giuseppe Zinotti, price on request, soon to be available at GZ stores. To get on the waiting list or to find a store near you, go to www.giuseppe-zanotti-design.com.
