Capes

Capes
In the world of outerwear, you've got glamorous cover-ups (faux furs), old-faithful options (trench coats), popular pieces (little leather jackets), and then there are capes. To speak plainly, capes are a little odd. What other piece of clothing references brave super heroes, blood-sucking vampires, and James Brown in a single glance? Storied associations aside, the simple truth of capes is that they can be subtle and attention-getting articles of clothing. This duality makes them very attractive to celebrities, so it's no surprise that the cape is Still Loitering.

When it comes to wearing capes, many women (ourselves included) get aggravated by how a seemingly uncomplicated item can raise so many sartorial questions. We found a few good women who have worn capes well to showcase your style options. Starting back in 2005, Sienna Miller wore a petite black cape and short, slightly pleated skirt while out and about in London. Nicole Richie was cape-tivated by this trend in 2006, when she wore a hip-length, snowy cape with skinny jeans and knee-high boots for shopping at Fred Segal. Lindsay Lohan crusaded with her cape and some wide leg jeans in New York in early 2007, also choosing the same versatile, hip length like Richie. Kate Moss picked an abbreviated, sparkly, fancy cape in October when she attended a party celebrating her holiday collection for Topshop. She paired her vintage Deco capelet with a black satin cat suit; leave it to Glossy Mossy to mix decades flawlessly. Finally, we have Rosario Dawson, seen above last week, en route to a Dolce & Gabbana party in New York City. Her dramatic gray cape looks modern, thanks to the double-breasted row of buttons and high collar.

Thanks to the military and equestrian elements on the Fall 07 runways, there are loads of great capes for your purchasing pleasure. Check out Zac Posen, Stella McCartney, Chloe, and Michael Kors for their sublime riffs on this outerwear style. Or you can take a gander at Burberry's Military Cape ($895), which is available now. It's a wool and cashmere bit of gorgeousness, with a stand collar and very official looking shoulder shields. Topshop has a similarly shaped version, their Short Belted Cape ($140) obviously has different design elements, but the vibe is similar. One of our favorite variations comes courtesy of Delia's. The Ashley Capelet ($58.50) is quite sophisticated, especially for the price, and is available in camel only via the web and catalog. Finally, for a modern, wearable cape, don't miss the Jovovitch-Hawk Dylan Cape ($465). It's slim and cropped making it the easiest way to try the loitering trend.
