This Wedding Dress Trend Is Not for the Faint of Heart

Allyson Payer

There’s a new wedding dress trend, and it might catch some brides-to-be off-guard. Coined “the sexy bride look” by The New York Times, the publication states that “a growing number of wedding dresses have taken on a distinctly Mediterranean flavor: low backs that skim the derrière, deep navel-revealing necklines and a shocking amount of sheer fabric.”

To get the scoop on the trend, they consulted the owner and namesake of prestigious New York bridal salon Mark Ingram Atelier, who says that the sultry bride has become the rising norm. He credits celebrities like Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian (see: Met Gala 2015), who often wear sheer gowns with strategically placed beading on the red carpet. He says, “Bridal has become a red carpet moment, and the gowns reveal so much more.” Ingram cites Isreal- and Meditteranean-based designers as those responsible for furthering the trend, with Christos Costarellos, Zuhair Murad, and Elie Saab (among others) as creators of red carpet–inspired bridal designs. He adds that classic American designers like Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta have been slower to jump on board.

Given that sheer fabrics and boudoir are major trends this spring, we can’t say that the sexy bride look comes as a surprise. But with bridal styles changing every year, Ingram cautions that the risqué bridal look may not be around for long. Our suggestion? If you love the alluring bridal look, choose a dress that incorporates hints of it so that your chosen gown still appears relevant and classic when you look back at the photos years from now.
