At Christian Dior, a jeweled collar on the raspberry Coppelia Long Dress (price upon request, available by special order at 800.929.DIOR) replaces the need for a statement necklace. Paired with suede Ballet Heels ($110, 800.929.DIOR), the overall look is elegant--but not stuffy! Altuzarra's take has more edge, which isn't surprising when you consider the designer's cool, downtown clientele. The neckline and waist of the Surya Long Sleeve Gathered Dress With Printed Skirt and Embroidered Belt is trimmed in medallion coins, a nod to a Moroccan belly dancer's costume. A heavy city boot--Gianvito Rossi for Altuzarra's Tassel Croc Booties ($1084, available at Le Lutin or Day & Night)--brings urban flair to the exotic frock. Sadly, the runway dress was never produced, though a similar style in black is available (price upon request, 617.262.8500).
Over at Givenchy and Marni, necklines got even more elaborate. At the former, designer Riccardo Tisci sent a striking outfit down the catwalk, including a Brown Embroidered Wool Sweater ($4565, 888.222.7639), Brown Leather Trousers ($5645, 888.222.7639), and Over The Knee Calf Leather Boots ($1890, 888.222.7639). But it's the sweater's brooch-like appliques that take the outfit from monochrome to memorable! On the other hand, Marni uses ornate rhinestone discs, each a different design, to define the neckline of the Embroidered Wool Crepe Dress ($4230).
Just a few months after these embellished necklines ruled the runway, Emma Stone displayed her sartorial savvy as one of the first to wear the trend! The actress attended a press conference for The Amazing Spider-Man in Seoul, wearing Burberry Prorsum's Striped Bead-Neck Tee ($795) and Ink Wool Blend Draped Hem Skirt ($1495) from the F/W 12 collection, as well as Brian Atwood's Nico Pumps ($595) in Red Patent Leather. Stone's top is an interesting mash-up of sporty (thick olive and navy stripes) and bohemian (turquoise stone embellishments) elements. For a playful yet polished look that's office-appropriate, wear it under a blazer in lieu of a fussy silk blouse!
The simplest way to try this trend on your own is by selecting a dress with a chic embellished neckline. We suggest a summery LWD with a studded collar, like Shoshanna's Melissa Beaded Neckline Dress ($395) or Sass & Bide's Know The Ropes Embellished Brocade Dress ($750). Oasis' Beaded Dress ($108), Milly's Beaded Sheath Dress ($370) in Turquoise, and Warehouse's Embellished Neck Dress ($75) work well if you're attending a cocktail party, wedding, or other fancy fete; a little decorative sparkle is all you need to elevate your look! If you prefer a longer hemline, consider T-Bags' Embellished Jersey Maxi Dress ($104), which combines two in-demand trends: tribal print and a beaded neckline.
There are plenty of embellished tops on the market as well. Romeo & Juliet's Beaded Tank Top ($68) and Stella McCartney's Beaded Jersey Tee ($685) are easy-breezy tanks ideal for warm weather, while Reiss' Brenda Embellished Neck Sweatshirt ($45) and ASOS' Sweatshirt With Rocco Beads ($32) will transition well into fall. Just be sure to style any of these shirts with a slim pencil skirt a la Stone, like
Vanessa Bruno's Black Peplum Skirt ($390) or Diane von Furstenberg's Esme Pencil Skirt ($245) in Kiwi, for a sophisticated outcome!--Tiffany Tse
