This Summer Bag Might Be Better Than a Trip to Mykonos
When a sculptural straw vessel that resembled a piece of pottery with a strap recently appeared in our Instagram feeds, we knew it was the start of something.
The bag in question is by visionary designer Rosie Assoulin, whose trendsetting celeb fans include Solange, Rihanna, and Leandra Medine. It currently comes in a few styles and sizes sold on Net-a-Porter and Moda Operandi, the smaller one being billed as a woven "jug" clutch, and the larger one as a "straw tote." It's clear these are anything but your average Birkin basket bags though, with their strange, surreal-looking silhouettes that resemble a sea creature and take their shape from the ancient Grecian vessel used to carry wine.
The market seems ripe for a cool-girl evolution on the straw basket right now, and we're calling that Assoulin's iteration will reign supreme. Sure, straw baskets have been in style since Birkin iconized the look in the '70s, but they surged in popularity again in the last two years, with Doen's wildly popular Market Tote, and then with versions hitting more mainstream retailers like Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Forever 21. Perusing the comments section on Assoulin's Instagram photos, you'll find statements from It girls in L.A. and NYC along the lines of "going to need this bag," "would give up coffee to afford this," and "marvelous." We happen to agree. Keep scrolling to shop the soon-to-be-everywhere bag!
Juxtaposed against preppy red-and-white stripes, the bohemian red mini bag looks right at home.
We might have to start collecting them since they clearly double as off-duty décor.
The yellow version is more bright and bold than the red and natural options, but if you're the risk-taking type, it's a winner.
