4 Fresh Ways to Wear This Season's Throwback Trend
Like just about every fashion person I follow on Instagram, I've been hit hard by the gingham bug this summer. Pants, PJs, dresses, jumpsuits—piece by piece, the retro pattern is gradually taking over my closet.
And don't get me wrong: I'm not mad about it. But I'm also a little wary about veering too far into costume-y territory, especially considering the unabashed femininity of the rest of the season's biggest trends—ruffles, basket bags, cat-eye sunglasses, and the like. While the head-to-toe '60s-French-girl look is fab on some people (Jeanne Damas, I'm lookin' at you), mixing it up is more my style. Think sneakers and floaty dresses, tailored blazers and distressed denim, or vintage-y prints with modern pieces.
And it seems I'm not alone. Below, see four ways to style the biggest throwback print trends of the season—from feminine florals to monochromatic polka dots—while looking very 2017.
Gingham + a Graphic Tee

Brigitte Bardot may have worn the print head-to-toe with a nipped waist and flared skirt, but the ultra-femme look isn't for everyone. To tamp down gingham's girlier connotations, layer your favorite graphic tee underneath.
Leopard + Mixed Prints

Lean in to the "look-at-me" nature of leopard by adding not one, but two other prints to the mix. This outfit works especially well because of the jacket's complementary color scheme.
Polka Dots + Bold Hues

Black-and-white prints go particularly well with brights, so try pairing classic polka dots with a bit of neon orange or fire-engine red.
Vintage Florals + Tough Boots

Consider this the perfect excuse to dig out your old Docs: sturdy footwear adds a bit of edge to the season's romantic florals, and is a practical, cliché-free alternative to the boho look for summer festivals.
