Meet Pamela Katz, Fashion's Next Big Thing
We’re always on the hunt for stylish ladies to inspire both our wardrobes and careers, and Pamela Katz packs a one-two punch by doing both. The talented multi-hyphenate (she’s a model, DJ, and stylist) has starred in campaigns for the likes of Glossier and Vans, and DJed some of the fashion world’s hottest parties—all by the ripe age of 23. Given her striking beauty, epic music taste, and the fact that she’s represented by PRE.VEYOR (whose tightly curated roster includes Hannah Bronfman and Virgil Abloh), we have a feeling her name will be inescapable in no time. So, to beat the world to the chase, we caught up with Katz to chat about how she got her start, her fashion standbys, and more. Scroll down to find out what she had to say!
WHO WHAT WEAR: You're a DJ, stylist, and model. How do you juggle those three different roles?
PAMELA KATZ: Well, lucky for me, it all actually works in my favor! Modeling is usually a full-day job (9 a.m.–6 p.m.). DJing is usually an evening/night-shift (7 p.m.–12 a.m.). Styling is also a full day job like modeling, but it [only] comes every now and then. For me, styling is spontaneous and thrilling. I never plan in advance with styling. When I assist on set, it's [usually] only a day’s notice because I just so happen to have the day free! Yes, each role is a lot of work, but, if I wasn't doing it for work, I would be doing it for fun!
WWW: Is there one role you're most passionate about?
PK: Right now I’m most passionate about DJing. It’s my most [recently] learned skill and something I have craved for a long time. I was always the girl who was so passionate about her music but didn't know what to do with it since I didn't play an instrument or sing. Growing up, I would make insane numbers of CDs for all of my best friends and even my first love! Learning how to DJ has allowed me to express myself through music that not only makes me feel good but makes others feel good, too. It's the best and most fun service I could be doing. It has also opened up many doors for me in the fashion industry.
WWW: Can you tell us how you got your start in the fashion industry?
PK: To be honest, I've used my Instagram as a social platform to express myself and my lifestyle, while also using it to find inspiration. After graduating from college, I moved back to NYC and got right into fashion. Big thanks to former Cosmopolitan girl–turned-LoveShackFancy designer, Rebecca Cohen, for taking me in and teaching me the ropes!
WWW: Do you have any mentors or people whose career paths really inspire you?
PK: I definitely have mentors. Speaking of Rebecca Cohen… She taught me how to be a grown-up—to not ask a question until I have done every possible thing to figure it out first, to read between the lines, and to put myself out there with all the right people. She’s just a great person and I really admire her.
Hannah Bronfman is also an inspiration to me. While juggling her entrepreneurial lifestyle of being a DJ, beauty and fitness expert, and everything else Hannah's day-to-day consists of, she manages to make it look easy and insanely fun. She motivates me.
[Also] my friend Nico who runs FindYourCalifornia. She’s extremely talented and hardworking. As a photographer, director, stylist, makeup artist, and blogger, she's got it going on, and I love being a part of her projects!
Other than these specific names, I envy and respect any girl who works through challenges to be the best version of themselves.
WWW: What's your go-to music for playing at a fashion party? Are there any new artists you're loving right now?
PK: My go-to music at a fashion party is hip-hop and dance. As many can agree, I am loving Kanye's new album [The Life of Pablo]. When I say "dance" I’m referring to my groovy girl Natalie Bergman from the group Wild Belle!
WWW: How would you describe your day-to-day style?
PK: Classic, clean, cool. I love neutrals. My white Hanes tee, my Levi’s 501 jeans, my classic white leather Vans, my IRO leather jacket, and RRL necktie. That's my go-to look.
WWW: What do you wear to stay comfortable while DJing?
PK: To stay comfy while DJing, I usually wear my hair natural because I feel most myself that way. Also my Maje black leather combat boots keep me on my feet!
WWW: What's the #1 fashion item you can't live without?
PK: My engagement ring!
WWW: What advice would you give someone looking to break into the fashion industry?
PK: Wherever you are in the world, meet a new friend every single day! You never know who that person knows or when they will think of you. Being nice and working hard is also key, and self-confidence is more than necessary!
