Check Out Designer Marissa Webb's Knockout Debut Collection
When an acclaimed J.Crew alum decides to carve out her own path in the design world, we expect nothing less than stellar results. That’s why we were thrilled when Marissa Webb, who served as J.Crew’s former Vice President of Womenswear Design for over a decade, debuted her eponymous line for S/S 13. The designer recently launched an e-commerce site showcasing her first collection, a mélange of structured jackets and pretty silk blouses (bonus: the site exclusively retails an assortment of her sleek, sophisticated footwear too). The line’s a clever mix of feminine and masculine elements: expertly tailored clothes and edgy leather pieces balanced out by stunning prints and playful sequined items. Read on for our Q&A with Webb and some of our favorite picks, and shop the rest of Webb’s spring essentials on her site or at Barneys New York.
1. Skyler Sequin Top ($525)
Your go-to top for a night out: a bright sequin shell. Toughen it up with leather pants for a glamorous spin on downtown style.
2. Delphine Watermark Plaid Swirl Skirt ($595)
A subtle watercolor plaid motif softens up this pencil skirt. It pairs perfectly with a button-down top for the office, and teamed with a cropped moto jacket, the skirt works well for after-hours drinks too.
3. Willa Pointy Toe Heels ($498) in Neon Yellow
A playful pop of neon is quick way to energize your outfit. Slip on these pointy-toe stunners with a pair of slim, cropped trousers, the better to showcase the cool buckled ankle-strap. They're also available in a black and white combo, green, black, and a bright orange-red.
Designer Q& A with Marissa Webb
When did you start your line?
The doors to the studio officially opened on January 16th, but as we all know, it takes a while to set up a company, so I had a few months working from home.
Describe the Marissa Webb muse.
I honestly do not have just one person I would consider the Marissa Webb muse. It's every strong, confident woman that enjoys life, taking risks, and loves expressing herself through her style.
What was the inspiration behind the S/S 13 collection?
The inspiration was the mix of soft and hard. I love the architecture and concrete of the city, but love the flow, softness, and motion of nature. It was the two elements playing off of each other. It's the DNA of the label and will continue throughout the seasons. I'm enjoying evolving as an independent designer and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes up next.
What's one piece in your wardrobe you can’t live without?
That's like asking which of my three dogs I love the most! I guess if I had to pick one, it would be an irreplaceable item like my vintage 1950s Chanel dress.
Who would you love to see wearing your designs and why?
I would love to see any woman striding down the street feeling confident in a Marissa Webb design. But if I had to pick one famous face, it would be my girl crush Cate Blanchett. She's so elegant and that beautiful smile just wins me over every time.
