The Most Stylish First Ladies Throughout History

Erin Fitzpatrick

With the sad news of Nancy Reagan's passing, we were reminded of the indelible mark she left on White House fashion. "Nancy Reagan was the epitome of a stylish first lady, bringing elegance and simple glamour to the White House," says Lyn Paolo, who's dressed fictional first ladies on Scandal and The West Wing. "She embraced polished silhouettes as well as staples of the 1980s such as large shoulders. Her love of designers such as Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, and Kenneth Lane jewels spoke volumes of the time period and created a road map for fashion."

And we couldn't agree more. In homage to the late Reagan and her standout style, we decided to do a retrospective of White House fashion through the years. Scroll down for a list of some of our favorite fashionable American first ladies throughout history!
