Derek Lam’s known for his modern, luxe take on sportswear, but for S/S 13, the designer gave his collection a decidedly retro slant. Lam favored the ‘60s and ‘70s, referencing the paintings of famed portraitist Barkley L. Hendricks as well as films from that same era, in his crisp, elegant silhouettes and vintage color palette. Just take a look at his ladylike cuts, channeling demure sophistication without seeming prim, and the shades of mustard, moss green, and burgundy that popped up on everything from midi skirts to tailored trousers. At the same time, Lam also utilized the clean, functional lines inspired by the Bauhaus movement to inform sleek leather pieces and boxy coats, the kind of clothes we expect to see on stylephiles everywhere this season.
