10 Things Your Mom Taught You About Style That Are Actually True

Like it or not, if there’s one singular person who probably has the most influence on the development of your personal style, its your mother. Whether visually inspiring the way you dress or verbally dishing out advice and wisdom, she’s the woman who has likely had the most impact on how you dress yourself.

And as much as it pains us to admit, in our adulthood, many of her truisms have turned out to be just that—very, very true.

Scroll down for 10 things your mom was totally right about—and 20 pieces to shop in her honor.

    1. When it comes to showing skin, one must be strategic.

As we’ve seen, it’s fine to show skin, as long as you do so in moderation. For example, a little black bralette pairs perfectly with a full skirt, as Jessica Alba proves to perfection.

Try a super-tiny cropped top, paired with a less revealing skirt or pant.

    2. Always wear underwear—you just never know what might happen.

Our mothers used to tell us that you must never leave the house without wearing undies—though we’re not sure why you’d want to—because if Lord forbid you get into a wreck or something, you don’t want to be caught without skivvies. (This also works out nicely since the sheer trend is in full effect at the moment—undies are a must!)

    5. You really do need to learn to properly walk in heels.

A woman who can’t walk in her heels is one of the most tragic sights ever. Master walking in them before you splurge on a pair that are way-high.

Once you've nailed your heel-walking technique, splurge on a statement pair.

    9. When it comes to clothes, the right fit is the most important thing.

    PHOTO: Fame Flynet

Whether you’re wearing a cocktail-length dress, a sleek pair of trousers, or just about anything—fit reigns supreme. No one knows this better than Kim Kardashian—mom Kris Jenner taught her well!

Last (but certainly not least): don’t be a wallflower. If you love wild prints, wear them. If you prefer wearing exclusively black, then do it—let your style be a genuine expression of who you are, and don’t try to be something you’re not.
