On The Runway
Since sunglasses are practically a warm-weather necessity during the sunny seasons ahead, it's no surprise there were mirrored renditions galore on the S/S 12 runways. Both Trussardi and Moschino Cheap and Chic displayed round-shaped sunnies with iridescent lenses; while the former showed flashy frames in bright blue, the latter's Sunglasses ($225, 212.243.8600) were slightly more understated in coppery brown. Despite the difference in color, both pairs offer an eye-catching take on an already-bold trend.
On The Street
This accessory du jour is well-suited off the catwalk too, as a slew of in-the-know stylephiles have recently donned bright, mirrored sunglasses! Back in February, Fearne Cotton slipped on Topshop's Black Metal Clip Round Sunglasses ($45) with smoky reflective lenses while on her way to BBC Radio 1 in London (far left). The TV/radio presenter's on-trend frames give her casual look some visual intrigue; after all, with frames that shiny, you don't need much else in the way of accessories! One savvy dresser photographed during New York Fashion Week S/S 12 also shielded her eyes from the sun with a pair of reflective specs, cleverly chosen to best flatter her mug (bottom right). The small size of her glossy lenses doesn't overwhelm her face shape, while the gold-rimmed frames add just the right touch of glitz to her laid-back look. We spotted another inspirational street style snap, whose green-tinted frames lent her vibrant ensemble a jolt of color (center right). Thanks to its oversized, bug-eye shape, this particular trailblazer's prismatic sunnies provide both extra coverage and a major style statement! We're also quite fond of Ezgi Kiramer's pair; the Turkish fashion blogger sported Illesteva's Mademoiselle Black Sunglasses ($260), an edgy twist on the mirror trend (center). The lustrous silver lenses and sleek black frames come in an exaggerated size, and serve as a stunning accent to any look.
On The Market
Though we could go on gushing about the way fashion insiders wear mirrored sunnies, it all remains, well, smoke and mirrors unless you try the look for yourself! We've rounded up a variety of shapes and sizes so you can find frames that best suit your style sensibilities. Our must-have pick is Illesteva's Le Steel Sunglasses ($260) in Silver, a polished silver pair with gunmetal-tinted lenses; its versatile hue easily matches any ensemble, plus its flattering shape makes it an instant hit. We've also sourced a handful of alternatives: for starters, American Apparel's Chatsworth Sunglasses ($45) in Blue/Black or Ray-Ban's Youngster Sunglasses ($109) are basic and relatively affordable pairs to try, while ASOS' Tort Plastic Aviator Sunglasses With Mirrored Lens ($21) combine tortoiseshell frames with mirrored lenses for a chic twist on the trend. If you're fond of thicker frames, check out Illesteva's Freida Sunglasses ($200), which feature a round shape, or Karen Walker's Soul Club Sunglasses ($220), which are more square-like. Those who aren't shy about wearing colored sunnies will love Ray-Ban's Youngster Brad Sunglasses ($144) and Freeway's L.A. Rays Sunglasses ($100) in Matte White With Mirrored Lenses, though we also like the vivid kaleidoscopic lenses of Super's Basic Sunglasses ($163) in Black/Rainbow. Whichever specs you go for, you won't even need a mirror to tell you you're the fairest of them all!--Tiffany Tse
