Folk

Folk
Monday, October, 15, 2012 Though the fall collections were filled with plenty of folk-inspired elements, the ornate prints, rich colors, and detailed embroidery on the runways were anything but homespun. Rather, the arts and crafts trend was updated in contemporary fabrics and silhouettes. Borrowing from ethnic clothing styles from around the globe, like a traditional Russian costume and Asian-influenced handiwork, this season's outcome was elegant and fit for a modern-day globetrotter, many of whom we also spotted in the look. Continue reading today's Microtrend story to learn more about the trend and how to wear it too!On The Runway
Both Valentino and Collette Dinnigan offered a sophisticated evening take on the look in their F/W 12 collections. At the former, creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli designed outfits with folk-inspired details, like puffed sleeves and intricate needlepoint. But the last look of the show truly elevated the humble folk trend to a high fashion playing field: the label's Sequined Multi Color Gown ($38000, 310.273.0300), paired with Garavani Silver Crystal Tango Stilettos ($1395), was swathed in crystals that emulated a folksy carpet pattern. On the other hand, Collette Dinnigan opted for dark romance with the Beaded Paisley Spot Lace Ruffled Dress ($1530). The frock's yarn-loop embroidery lends the look a crafty feel that's also elegant at the same time.

On Celebrities
Anna Dello Russo
When Anna Dello Russo shows up wearing a certain trend, you can be sure it's worth noting! At Giambattista Valli's S/S 13 show in Paris earlier this month, the editor wore Peter Pilotto's Amber Blouse ($2454, 888.888.4757) and Skirt ($2685, 888.888.4757) from the S/S 13 collection. The exuberant combo is a clash of folkloric patterns that, when pulled together with Kenzo sunglasses, ADR x H&M bracelets, and a Jimmy Choo clutch, is unquestionably breathtaking.

Street Style
We spotted a trendsetting savant on Stockholm Street Style whose embroidered blouse warranted a mention in today's story too. With the addition of a metallic quilted vest and braided gold belt, her outfit's channels the folk trend but is ultimately quite modern.

Anya Ziourova
While attending Salvatore Ferragamo's Fashion's Night Out event in September in New York, stylist and Tatler Russia's Fashion Director Anya Ziourova wore a head-to-toe look from the label's F/W 12 collection. Her ensemble showcases several folk-inspired elements, like the gold embroidery of her dress and the tassels on her shoes, but in a luxe way.

Leigh Lezark
The ornate embroidery on Leigh Lezark's AF Vandevorst vest, which she wore to Vanessa Bruno's S/S 13 show in Paris last month, offers a cool contrast to the menswear-inspired silhouette. The sprawling floral, bejeweled pattern brightens up the black top and makes it appropriate for an after-dark event.

Caroline Sieber
The folk theme turns sweetly feminine in Caroline Sieber's Chanel knit dress from the Pre-Fall 12 collection. The stylist, who chose simple accompaniments like Valentino pumps and a vintage clutch, selected the look for the launch of Carine Roitfeld's CR Fashion Book in New York last month. Her gown's modest, long-sleeved silhouette gets updated with laser-cut trim and a fresh, bubblegum-pink hue.

Get The Look/Dresses & Skirts
Feeling a tad folkloric this season? You can easily get the look by slipping into a folk-inspired dress. For daytime events, we suggest Velvet's Alba Aztec Embroidered Dress ($65) or Alice by Temperley Mini Beatrice Embroidered Georgette Dress ($435), two casual, knee-length frocks embellished with intricate embroidery. More formal affairs call for either Tibi's Embroidered Cutout Wool Dress ($391) or Temperley London's Floral Embroidered Gown ($4115). Another cool option is Matthew Williamson's Embroidered Skirt ($635) teamed with a fitted blouse and heels for a night out.

Get The Look/Tops & Jackets
If dresses aren't quite your thing, look into a top or jacket with some folksy embroidery instead! Thakoon's Embroidered Silk-Gauze Blouse ($396) is a sophisticated take on the peasant blouse-and you can't go wrong with its versatile black and white motif. You could also throw on Alice by Temperley's Embroidered Chiffon Blouse ($106) or Joie's Mirin Tank ($132) in Blood Orange with your favorite pair of jeans and a chunky cardigan for an all-purpose weekend look. Finally, Free People's Seamed & Embroidered Jacket in Vegan Leather ($248) is a folksy twist on your standard leather cover-up--you'll want to wear it with almost everything this fall!--Tiffany Tse
