As editors, we're always on the lookout for game-changing fashion trends, but we're also equally intrigued by the evolution of sartorial themes and how they transform from season to season. Today's Microtrend-Colorful Snakeskin-is a perfect example of the latter. This past spring, we saw a sudden resurgence of serpentine prints in neutral hues on all kinds of accessories, and were delighted to note even more snakeskin for fall, albeit with a twist. This time around, snake prints are available in a slew of bright hues, and can be found on everything from beautiful blazers to skintight pants!
If you're interested in this trend, but not quite ready to try a statement piece like snake-print pants, go for a colorful cropped jacket or a bright blazer a la Chanel Iman. The model attended a cocktail party at Le Caprice in New York earlier this fall in a stunning snakeskin-accented look from Gucci's F/W 11 collection. Iman paired the Malachite Green Painted Shiny Python Belted Jacket ($9500) with the fashion house's Leaves Silk Crepe de Chine Cross Scarf Shirt ($795) and the sleek Luxury Stretch Flannel Wide Flare Pants ($850) in Olive. The combination of the bright blazer with the neutral pants is decidedly chic, plus we love the jacket's slim lines. The overall effect is polished without being vampy, just as you'd want! If Iman's cocktail look is a bit too uptown for you, you could always look for snake-print outerwear in a more youthful cut-like a moto jacket-as one stylish civilian did, above. The cropped, red Snakeskin Leather Biker Jacket ($330) from Topshop looks marvelous paired with all-black basics and a neutral bag, like the taupe Mulberry Carter Camera Bag ($1400) shown here.
Simple Statement Pieces
Daring dressers should go for larger snake-print pieces, like the full midi skirt seen backstage at Chloe. For the French fashion house's F/W 11 collection, designer Hannah MacGibbon showed a minty green Pleated Snake Print Viscose Satin Skirt ($3268) paired with a solid Crepe De Chine Shirt ($1123), the patchwork Gabby Color-Block Bag ($2768), and Watersnake and Patent Leather Pumps ($650) for a grounded-yet-glam look. We also approve of the green python-print pants we spotted on Stockholm Street Style, especially the way their wearer styled them with a cream button-up blouse and flat ankle boots. In both cases, the colorful snakeskin piece has a simple silhouette and is paired with an equally unfussy blouse, a styling trick to note!
Of course, no matter if you're a risk-taker or prefer a more classic look, you can always punch up your wardrobe with some colorful snakeskin accents. Ladies who like to push the envelope-like Anna Dello Russo-can try vivid accessories, like the Prada Lurex, Suede, and Python Boots ($1700) ADR wore to the Mark Fast show, paired with Prada's Organza Dress with Embroidered Paillettes Detailing and Faux Fur Collar ($6680). If you'd like to embrace this trend in a subtler way, you could always opt for a single-hued accessory, like the Ankle Boots ($736) in Brown shown at Dries Van Noten or the ensemble Giovanna Battaglia selected for Gucci's S/S 12 show in Milan last month. The Italian editor wore Gucci's grape-colored python Medium Shoulder Flap Bag ($2900) with a vivid pink Silk Crepe de Chine Shirt Dress ($1850), also by Gucci, resulting in an outfit that was uncomplicated, yet incredibly striking.
Ready to try some colorful snakeskin yourself? We thought you might be game, so we've collected an assortment of pieces for consideration. While we already mentioned Topshop's red Snakeskin Leather Biker Jacket ($330), it's such a good pick we simply had to reference it again. Keeping in that color family, we'd also like to point out Aiko's Newton Snake-Print Dress ($138), which has a simple shirtdress silhouette and would look marvelous belted at the waist. We also discovered a few fabulous blouses, including Equipment's Python Signature Blouse ($228) in Orchid (we also like it in Peacoat Multi, which is a bit more blue), as well as Victoria's Secret's The Boyfriend Shirt ($45) in Teal Python and Etro's Python Print Top ($535), if you're looking for a splurge. Are you more of a pants girl? No worries, we've got you covered there too, just try Current/Elliott's The Ankle Skinny Low-Rise Printed Jeans ($200) in Blue Ribbon (also available in Paprika) or Tripp NYC's T-Back Skinny Jeans ($64) in Green/Black.
We've got some accessories ideas for you as well, dear readers. Topping our list: Zara's Snake Skin Court Shoes ($129), which are amazing in both Sea Green and Yellow. You also might like Alice + Olivia's Paige Platform Booties ($465) in Red Faux Python, as well as ASOS' Faux Bright Snake Clutch Bag ($46). Finally, we highly recommend Alexander McQueen's Snakeskin and Brass Wrap Bracelet ($315), which comes in Blue/Black and Fuchsia/Black and might be the perfect low-profile way to wear this trend!
