Animal Planet

Animal Planet
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my--more like, oh yes! At least that's the consensus when it comes to fall fashion anyway, as everything from kitschy flamingos to precious butterflies are leaving their tracks on the season's most sought-after clothing and accessories. It's a real animal planet out there, both on the runways (Burberry and Paul & Joe) and on the streets (Miranda Kerr and Alexa Chung), which is why we've decided to take a moment and further explore these exotic and oh-so stylish findings in today's Microtrend story!

On the Runways
At Burberry, cartoonish critters embroidered on knit sweaters and tees, like the Beaded Owl T-Shirt ($650), paid homage to the English countryside and brought an element of youthful irreverence to designer Christopher Bailey's prim nipped waists and voluminous peplums. While the witty field animals at Burberry are certainly charming, the look doesn't always have to be so sweet. For example, at Paul & Joe, the wool jacquard Pull Aubusson Sweater ($457) teamed with low-slung trousers feels more cool than cute, and has an uncomplicated menswear vibe we love.

On Celebrities/Clothing
Jordana Brewster
At a Beverly Hills preview of the latest designs from Dannijo and Tucker by Gaby Basora late last month, actress Jordana Brewster caught our eye in a sheer Tucker by Gaby Basora top and Button Wrap Skirt ($192) paired with Vince Camuto's Imogene Wedges ($225). The skirt's pink butterfly print gives Brewster's whole look a touch of ladylike femininity.

Kate Moss
Kate Moss listened to her animal instincts while vacationing in Saint-Tropez this month, choosing a tiger face tee for her afternoon boating excursion. Paired with black denim cutoffs, the slinky top infuses her daytime look with urban safari style.

On Celebrities/Bags
Alexa Chung
Leave it to Alexa Chung--our favorite cheeky Brit--to bring a dose of humor to her chic ensemble at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London earlier this year. The reader favorite accessorized her black and white Moschino dress with a playful Charlotte Olympia raffia flamingo and palm tree-embellished clutch, which we're sad to report is no longer available!

Miranda Kerr
While the mint green Balenciaga dress Miranda Kerr wore out in New York last month is pure perfection, it was her Hermes tiger print bag, which is sadly no longer available, that really stood out, giving her summer-in-the-city look a bohemian-glam finish.

Get The Look
Want to let your wardrobe take a walk on the wild side too? We thought so, which is why we scoured the market for an assortment of chic items to help you get the look. If you fancy a print, please don't miss Tucker's Classic Mini Dress ($338), which comes in a pretty green hue and is covered with butterflies, or for the equestrian lover, Quiksilver's Sleeveless Sable Blouse ($78). Looking for an accessory instead? Tory Burch's Foxy Printed Chiffon Scarf ($165) is sure to add some country charm to your wardrobe, while Kate Spade's Camels Bon Shopper Tote ($148) will make a playful accompaniment to any weekend outfit.

While we adore a repeating animal motif, we also have a soft spot for literal depictions and photo prints of these creatures too! Most often found on cozy sweaters, like Topshop's Knitted Animal Face Jumper ($84), Aubin & Wills' Portland Fox-Intarsia Wool Sweater ($215), Kenzo's Tiger Embroidery on Wool Knit Sweater ($873), and our favorite, Mulberry's Double Tiger Motif Jumper ($698), this trend is sure to make a splash when the chilly weather sets in. If you're not quite ready for long sleeves, try Zara's Printed Silk T-Shirt ($70), NW3's Mr. Fox Print T-Shirt ($60), or Stella McCartney's Printed Organic Cotton T-Shirt ($270). The large lion face on the latter is completely cool and would look great worn with skinny jeans and a leather jacket. Whatever piece or pieces you decide to pick up today, we can assure you of one thing: you'll definitely stand out from the pack!--Jessica Baker
