Though she considered doing a 180 (going brunette a la Miranda Kerr) it didn't take long for Chiarot to realize she was really just interested in a better, meaning icier and healthier, version of her current fade. A change needn't be dramatic to make a difference.

We set an unofficial rule to stay away from anything black over the course of the makeover. Since Hilger likes a dramatic eye, we compromised with eyelash extensions. Ninety minutes at Lashfully salon in Beverly Hills left her with thick, natural-looking lashes. "They stay on for about four to six weeks," says Courtney Casgraux, the technician who applied over 200 extensions. "We recommend you don't wear mascara because the more you mess with them, the more chance there is of you pulling out your own lashes." In fact, she adds, if you leave them alone, wearing extensions should result in your own lashes growing fuller.

Hilger's first request? Glowing skin. "Too much product and shimmer and everything else can look fake," Robinette says. The key to immediate luminescence is mixing a serum with your foundation. Robinette combined LaMer's The Concentrate ($275) with Giorgio Armani's Maestro Foundation ($62). "I went about one shade darker than [Hilger's] natural tone for some warmth," she says.
"If you have dark eyebrows and light hair, it's important to lighten up the brows," Robinette says. So she used Smashbox's Brow Tech Trio ($25) to fill in any sparse areas with one shade lighter than Hilger's natural brow color. To finish, a light dusting of Fresh's Satin Luster Face Palette ($45) in Beige Pearl around the eyes and on the cheekbones.

"I've always been afraid of colorful lipstick," Hilger says. "I've never found a color that I like so I usually stick to nudes." Bad idea, Robinette says. "Nude tends to wash out blondes and pink can be too Barbie-like." Coral, however, is just right. To get the look, try L'Oreal's Colour Riche Lipstick ($9) in Tropical Coral or Clarins' Rouge Prodige True Color Lipstick ($25) in Sunset. Because she'd had so much trouble with a statement lip before, this was Hilger's favorite look.

What if Hilger did want something more dramatic for evening, aside from her go-to CoverGirl Perfect Blend Eyeliner ($5) in Black? Robinette used two of the shades from Lancome's Color Design Palette ($49) in Taupe Craze to build a smoky copper eye. "I like doing the dark first because the point is to contour the eye to make it look bigger and then go back in and highlight with the lighter gold."
Hilger favors Tarte's Maracuja Divine Shine Lip Gloss ($21) in Dollface, but Robinette reached for Dior's Smoothing Lacquer Lip Polish ($31) in Expert Pink because it's "not too glossy or gooey, and with blonde hair you need a little pop of color."
Though she'll be playing with all three looks in 2013, Hilger's first resolution is to go back for more lashes. "They're phenomenal," she says, "And made it so easy to just get up and go!"
