On The Runways
While '90s fashion encompasses a wide range of trends, we couldn't help but notice that two iconic looks were represented on the fall runways: grunge and the club kid. We spotted the former at Opening Ceremony, where the brand channeled a teenage Chloe Sevigny with the Teal Jacquard Ruffle T Shirt Dress ($450) paired with a shrunken cardigan, opaque tights, and the Red Pony Shirley Boots ($484). Over at Junya Watanabe, where the look was more Lady Kire, models strutted down the runway sporting bright wigs and dramatic smoky eyes. Demure, below-the-knee dresses, like the Crushed-Velvet and Printed Georgette Midi Dress ($1810), paired with heavy combat-like boots evoked a cool disregard befitting of Generation X and offered a modern take on the underground look.
On the Streets
Carey Mulligan Out and about in New York early last month, actress Carey Mulligan stepped out in a sleeveless dress covered in tiny flowers and Prada's Kid Leather Flat Cage Sandals ($820). The frock's micro floral motif is not only perfect for a summer afternoon outing, but it's also a stylish nod to the mid-'90s hippie look. (Winona Ryder would totally approve!)
When it comes to the borrowed-from-the-boys outfit January Jones wore while out in Santa Monica a few weeks ago, it's all about the jeans! The Mad Men actress selected MiH Jeans' Monaco Cropped Kick Flare Jeans ($189), which have a relaxed fit and hit right at the ankle, showing off her Frye Carson Lace-Up Boots ($258). We also like that that she added a black fedora to give her look an extra dose of understated cool.
We're completely inspired by the ensemble one stylish civilian put together, as seen on Stockholm StreetStyle. The combination of the distressed open-knit tank top worn over a green velvet dress with embroidery and paired with combat boots is the epitome of grunge style.
Get The Look/Outerwear
If you'd like your wardrobe to time-travel back to the '90s, then consider today's story your one-stop shop for all your clothing, accessory, and beauty must-haves. First priority: a denim jacket! Whether you're planning on wearing it with a floral-covered skirt or light-wash jeans, we think Denim Refinery's Distressed Lee Jacket ($118) is a timeless option that will quickly become a closet go-to. In addition to the denim jacket, a furry layer in an autumnal hue, like Rachel Roy's cozy Pumpkin Spice Angora Fur Cardigan ($498), is a necessity, and would look stylish paired with everything from a baby doll dress to a flouncy miniskirt and tights.
Get The Look/Skirts and Dresses
If you're going to invest in a mini skirt this season, make sure it's Surface to Air's high-waisted Tate Skirt V1 ($260). It's a bit preppy, but still very cool, especially when teamed with a little cropped sweater for the weekend. If you're not into skirts, perhaps Sandro's Rodeo Dress ($390) will suit your fancy. With a bottle green color and contrasting white collar, we can definitely imagine Dionne from Clueless wearing this number, complete with knee-high socks and clogs, of course! Rounding out our clothing picks is Tucker's High Waisted Shorts ($242), which features a vibrant print that will punch up your neutrals in a flash.
Get The Look/Accessories
Once you've sorted out your '90s-influenced clothing, you'll want to snag a few accessories to complete the look. When it comes to your bag, go for a petite cross-body style like Coach's Legacy Leather Mini Mini Crossbody ($128). The convertible carrier allows for hands-free toting, which is ideal for the '90s girl on the go! Obviously today's look requires a choker of some sort, and what better way to channel your inner Drew Barrymore than with Claire's super affordable Velvet and Thread Choker ($6.50)? If you're on the hunt for a pair of shoes instead, look no further than ASOS' High Five Platform Bow Sandals ($86); the chunky platform and fuchsia velvet will not only complement your '90s attire, but will pair perfectly with fall's decadent looks too. We're also crazy about Zanzan's fluorescent yellow Mizaru Sunglasses ($405), as they make a standout addition to any ensemble.
Get The Look/Beauty
Lastly, if you're searching for a subtle way to hint at the '90s, Hard Candy's Just Nails Nail Polish ($4) in Teal is just the thing you need. The cool blue hue will bring an unexpected pop of color to all your neutrals! However you decide to address the '90s this season, we advise you to keep the era's most stylish ladies in mind--think: Chloe Sevigny, Kate Moss, and Angela Chase (a.k.a. Claire Danes)--when creating your own look!
