Anyone familiar with '90s fashion can tell you designer Gianni Versace played a prominent role in some of the decade's most iconic looks. How can you forget the revealing safety pin dress that put Elizabeth Hurley on the map overnight? Or the baroque-by-way-of-South Beach prints that covered everything from sultry bodysuits to belly-baring crop tops? Supermodels--including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, and Christy Turlington--were Versace's walking billboards, making their way around the party circuit in his bondage-inspired leather harnesses and flamboyant, bejeweled frocks. Simply put: it was the fashion house's golden era. Not surprisingly, these famous looks have served as inspiration for today's designers, with spring collections featuring Italian rococo details, checkerboard motifs, and flashes of skin with cutouts and thigh-high slits. We've never been so excited about an early '90s comeback, and after checking out today's fashion spread, you're sure to fall in love too! Nasty Gal Tom Cat Bustier ($38) Crop tops were, and still are, a Versace staple, so get the look with this feline-print top from Nasty Gal. Just be sure to balance the skin-baring silhouette with high-waist jeans--very Cindy Crawford. Mango Chain Link Belt ($40) Gianni Versace was all about flash and glamour, two qualities epitomized by Mango's metallic Chain Link Belt. Wear it with a leather mini for a full-blown '90s redux, or wrap it around a free-flowing frock for a more current take. Pixie Market Dress ($42, available mid February) Not only does this dress bring to mind Gianni Versace's infamous tile prints, but it's also a dead ringer for the checked and harlequin-print pieces at Balmain. Two reasons why this piece is a must-have! Guess Floral Blossom Jeans ($138) Embroidered detailing played a major role in Versace's collections, making these flower-adorned, pale blue skinnies an obvious choice. Add a peplum top and sleek heels to give them an of-the-moment feel. Pixie Market Gold Lion Earrings ($12) These chandelier earrings have a distinct baroque vibe reminiscent of Versace's more decadent looks. Pull your hair back into a polished ponytail to showcase their standout design. Thale Blanc Karina Clutch ($1210) in Green Sheep Leather This leopard-print and Swarovski-embellished clutch is bold, fun, and utterly fabulous--just like the Versace party girl. Alice + Olivia Sahara Zipper Sleeve Biker Jacket ($495) We love this jacket because, much like today's story, it's equal parts preppy and cool. Even better: you can wear it at the office with a silky blouse and trousers, then swap in casual pieces for the weekend. Alejandro Ingelmo Made in Maine Kennedy Penny Loafer ($475) Penny loafers might seem like an odd choice for today's story, but when you consider Versace's influence on the early '90s preppy movement--think: abbreviated sweaters paired with metallic mini skirts--you'll see they actually fit the bill perfectly. Estee Lauder Pure Color Vivid Shine Lipstick ($25) in Power Pink Versace's models all had one thing in common: standout pouts. Copy the look with Estee Lauder's Pure Color Vivid Shine Lipstick in Power Pink. The cotton candy shade will pop against natural makeup.
