The One Shoe Style That's Selling Out Everywhere

Dakota Johnson wears them everywhere, and street style stars adore them: Loafers are clearly having a moment in fashion right now, thanks to Gucci single-handedly sparking the craze. WWD tapped a handful of retail executives to get their take on the trend and elaborate on just how popular it has become because of Gucci.

“Our buy for loafers has doubled [in the last year],” Net-a-Porter’s fashion director, Lisa Aitken, told WWD. “It is definitely a growing category. We are selling product from Gucci incredibly fast—the first loafer launch sold out within a matter of days and it hasn’t slowed down.”

WWD also tapped The RealReal’s chief merchant, Rati Sahi Levesque, who explained that the trend is not just limited to the iconic Italian brand. “[Sales of] loafers beyond just Gucci have increased 100 percent … Chanel, Prada, The Row and Tod’s are moving really fast right now.” So if Dakota Johnson, Jennifer Aniston, Gigi Hadid, and others haven’t convinced you to jump on the bandwagon, perhaps these new statistics will.

Erin Fitzpatrick
Senior News Editor

Erin got her start as a Who What Wear intern over 12 years ago—back when the site only published a single story per day. (Who What Wear has since increased that number twentyfold.) She graduated magna cum laude from USC, which is how she ended up moving to Los Angeles from her hometown of San Diego. In college, she also interned at Refinery29, where she was promoted to editorial assistant and then assistant editor. After nearly three years at R29, she came back to WWW in 2016, where she currently holds the title of senior news editor (as well as the unofficial title of resident royal expert—in case you haven't noticed her numerous Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton stories). She spends her days trying to incorporate her idols, Anna Wintour and Roger Federer, into as many stories as possible. Outside of work, she loves tennis, classic rock, traveling, and smothering her dog with affection.
