Ellery

As longtime enthusiasts of the Australian fashion scene, it gives us great pleasure to highlight another incredible talent today: Kym Ellery, the editor-turned-designer behind this month's Line We Love. After spending over four years as a stylist and market editor for RUSSH, developing the magazine into the cutting-edge publication that it is today, the Perth native focused her considerable creative talents on a more personal project-launching her eponymous label. Now in its fifth year, Ellery is an international success, adored by the likes of Rihanna, Nicole Richie, and Kristen Bell. Today, we turn the spotlight on the line's Resort 13 collection, a stunning blend of feminine silhouettes (trapeze dresses and high-waisted trousers) and innovative craftsmanship (metallic origami skirts and intricate draping). Read on for details on some of our favorite pieces and don't miss our exclusive interview with the designer below.

Garcia Campo Soft Blazer ($1025, 323.655.2142) in Black and White
A printed blazer is just the piece to amp up your on-the-clock wardrobe. An easygoing fit and graphic pattern make this investment-worthy version a year-round essential.

Epiphany Fitted Shell Top with Embroidered Metal Plate Embellishment ($774, available late December)
This structured top is quite flattering, thanks to the subtle peplum detail at the waist. Play up its sleek silhouette by styling it with a solid-color pencil skirt for a professionally chic result.

Teddy Girl Spliced Bodice Dress ($805, available end of December) in Moss & Forest Green
This fit-and-flare dress is anything but understated, thanks to the contrasting panels. Throw on a sparkly statement necklace and ankle-strap heels to give it a party-ready look.

Yukata Sleeveless Drape Shift Dress ($1395)
A classic shift gets a feminine update with a romantic paisley print and draped bodice. Wear it now with opaque tights and ankle booties, then come spring, go bare-legged and swap in a pair of bright heels.

Chiquita High Waist Cheeky Shorts ($507) in Emerald Green
Rendered in emerald green silk, Ellery's take on hot pants is certain to be a showstopper. Add a long-sleeve button-up and wedges for a stylishly leggy look.

Q&A with Kym Ellery
What inspired the start of your design career?
My first move in the fashion industry was at RUSSH magazine as the Market Editor. Being exposed to a multitude of designers, it was during this time that I identified a significant gap in the market between high street and luxury. My label E L L E R Y began in 2007, and I set out to create a stable of modern classics that women really want to wear.

What was the inspiration behind this season's collection?
When I was young I had an extensive soft-toy collection, which I took great pride in! At the age of 18, I returned home to Perth to pack up my bedroom and foolishly threw out all of my childhood beloved teddy bears, one being my favourite bear named Delicatessen. Driven by the guilt of discarding my beloved bear, I created this collection as a homage.

How would you style specific pieces from this collection? Do you have a favorite piece in the collection?
My favourite look is an ivory triple silk organza cropped top with voluminous bear sleeves that I paired with a classic pencil skirt of the same fabric. Ellery often favors separates as an evening alternative and this playful, yet classic combination epitomizes the Ellery girl.

What kind of girl do you envision wearing your clothing?
The Ellery girl has a strong sense of personal style and appreciates the intricacies of well-made garments. She is understatedly bold and artfully constructs outfits that seem effortless. She is modernly classic and enjoys a point of difference.

How does your design process for a collection start?
My inspiration can spark from many-an-unexpected catalyst. Previous Ellery collections have been born from beach-side basketball, a visit to the emergency room, a David Hockney painting, and beauty pageants in the 1980's, to name but a few. I am always open to finding inspiration from all facets of life, from the remarkable to the seemingly mundane.
