Kendall Jenner on the Cruelty She Faced When She First Began Modeling

Jessica Schiffer

It would be easy to assume that a modeling career came easy to Kendall Jenner—she’s got the beautiful face, long limbs, and the famous family, after all—but she’s hinted before that wasn’t exactly the case. In fact, as she confesses in the latest issue of V Magazine, it was the total opposite! Shot by famed photographer Steven Klein for Issue 95, which hits stands on May 7, Jenner admits:

“You have no idea how many doors closed on me and how many adults were either initially reluctant to take a chance working with me or who outright laughed at me behind my back. It was kind of hard because all I was doing was going on go-sees, trying my best to break into this business as a teenager.”

But in the end, as we all know now, a few major designers came to the rescue and, almost overnight, made her the most coveted model around. “I am so grateful to Marc Jacobs, Riccardo Tisci, Karl Lagerfeld, and Katie Grand, who took a chance on me that first season and gave me an opportunity,” she tells the magazine. And who else does she have to thank for her success? Her parents, of course: “My parents taught me that work ethic is one of the most important keys in life, and I believe it.” Well, clearly, it’s paying off.
