Navigating winter stylishly can sometimes be a tall order. Layers can look chic up to a certain point—but once you start piling them on it can take a turn for the worst. And when you’re wearing a dress, there’s only so much a thick pair of tights and over-the-knee boots can do to keep you warm. That’s why we’re so thrilled that puffer jackets are officially cool this season.

Though once reserved for bitterly cold days, puffer jackets are now a fashion statement. And good thing, because they also do the best job of keeping you warm when temperatures plummet. The way to pull them off really comes down to some key styling tricks.

First, try belting them. This helps to give you some shape instead of looking boxy. Next, try wearing it off your shoulders. While we wouldn’t recommend styling it off the shoulder on seriously cold days, it’s a cool secret fashion girls use to make puffers look modern. Finally, pay attention to color and try a monochrome look. Matching the color of your dress to your puffer will instantly read as chic.

Go on to see and shop our favorite puffers, then see how fashion girls are styling theirs.
