While wearing white in the summertime calls for simple, breezy pieces (think: cotton t-shirts and linen dresses), winter white is somewhat more complex and requires a bit of textural intrigue. For example, take Derek Lam's sophisticated pairing: the chunky Corded Wool Cable Knit Sleeveless Sweater ($890) grounds the silk Georgette Maxi Skirt ($2650) in Ivory and keeps it from feeling too summery. The look was even more romantic at The Row, where the outfit consisted of the Long Cady Skirt ($1990) and a romantic blouse (like McQ Alexander McQueen's Crinkled Silk-Chiffon Blouse ($515)). The creamy separates, crafted in elegant chiffon, are unquestionably luxe when worn together.
On the other hand, Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler offered more sharply tailored interpretations of this stark shade. The former mixed minimalist white pieces, like the Magnified Fishnet Turtleneck ($795) in White, a buttoned-up vest, Wool-Twill Blazer ($560), and Cropped Wool-Twill Pants ($425). The resulting sleek silhouette is truly polished and perfectly crisp. Proenza Schouler combined the Asymmetric Leather-Coated Woven Cotton Jacket ($2650) with loose-fitting trousers, similar to the label's Wide Leg Pleated Pants ($875), for a striking statement. The oversized shapes make winter white unquestionably modern.
These wonderfully white runway outfits even inspired us to create our own look, one that makes use of artful layers and textures too. The key to this outfit is the classic layering trifecta--a collared shirt, sweater, and moto jacket--which looks undeniably fresh in monochrome white. Look for a button-down with a longer length, like Gap's Boyfriend Pocket Shirt ($60) in White, and a shrunken sweater, like Gap's Ribbed Turtleneck ($40) in Ivory Frost, to wear over it. Top it off with a cropped cover-up--we chose Schott N.Y.C.'s Lambskin Perfecto Moto Jacket ($560) in Offwhite for its cool hardware details.
To give the look a bit more depth, we added a textured knit skirt, Tibi's Tess Jacquard Pencil Skirt ($390) in Cream, which also brings a bit of coziness to the overall look. Finally, ground the all-white pieces with Hue's Soft Opaque Knee High Socks ($7) in Black and Charles David's Flash Booties ($395) in Black, which offer just the right amount of color contrast to a winter white outfit.--Tiffany Tse
