Emanuel Ungaro

Emanuel Ungaro
Tuesday, September, 14, 2010 Your Who What Wear editors are anything but wallflowers, and if you follow our tweets and are familiar with our past editorials, it's no secret that we're kind of obsessed with late eighties/early nineties (we swear the two mesh in today's fantastic post!). We've consistently vocalized our undying love for a certain posh area code and hit TV show (ahem, Beverly Hills 90210, the original version, of course), and have always had a soft spot for the flamboyant-yet-chic stylings of that previously mentioned era. Thus, when we saw Emanuel Ungaro's F/W 10 runway show--marked by bold bursts of color, cheeky pops of polka dots, and satin party dresses perfect for a modern Kelly Taylor prom queen--we knew that this collection was spot-on for our soiree-loving selves and the ideal subject for this month's Inspired By story!

All pop culture references and nods to the Brenda-loving zeitgeist aside, one of the things we find most striking about this collection is that it's very unique in terms of what we've been seeing for fall. While we adore all the fifties-inspired silhouettes seen at Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, and Isabel Marant and seventies-influenced opulence spotted at houses such as Pucci and Balmain, we appreciate how Emanuel Ungaro's Estrella Archs tackled a different decade with just as much verve. The knockout palette of red, fuchsia, and emerald green with splashes of menswear-inspired tweed and super-feminine chiffon makes for a vibrant, flirty collection that offers a festive alternative to your other ladylike and minimalist looks. And while the grab bag of lively ensembles does have a throwback sensation that immediately sparked our interest, the understated beauty look (think: minimal makeup and loose, sexy waves) modernizes the finished product. The result? A peppy cocktail look that speaks directly to our inner party girls--no wonder we're so excited to share it with you!

1. Coach Poppy Love Pin ($78)
Whether it's in the air or not, a little bit of rhinestone love is perfect for any occasion. Additionally--and more importantly--a pin is the kind of unexpected accessory choice that always catches our eye. Use it to adorn the lapel of your oversized blazer, or to provide a cheeky touch to a patterned, chiffon dress.

2. H&M Polka Dot Skirt ($40)
Ever since House of Holland put oversized, '90s-esque polka dots back on the stylesetting map in Spring 2009, the fashion pack has displayed unwavering devotion to this print. That said, when Archs gave the perky pattern a timely ladylike update by offering it in draped chiffon we couldn't have been more thrilled! Pair H&M's ripped-from-the-runway version with a sheer black top and opaque tights for a sexy, directional look.

3. mark Lipclick Full Color Lipstick ($10) in Baby Luv
One of our favorite purveyors of covetable cosmetics--mark--has once again struck gold with the new lovely Lipclick lipsticks! The sleek little tubes magnetically click shut (it's really a fun touch, we promise) guaranteeing the cap never falls off in your clutch, while the stick itself is both incredibly moisturizing and lightweight. While we recommend you snatch up all eight fancy-schmancy shades, we particularly like Baby Luv; girly but subtle, we find it to be the ideal pink!

4. JJ Winters Envelope Clutch ($295) in Red Patent Croco
Red is undoubtedly one of fall's hottest colors-and JJ Winters' rectangular clutch is the perfect way to dabble in this vivacious trend. Not only does it provide that au courant verve to any ensemble, but it also adds a layer of textural intrigue too. Use it to accent menswear basics--like a button-down and tweed trousers--or brighten up your LBD.

5. Forever 21 Rosette Gathered Dress ($30) in Fuchsia
Rosettes and bubble hems and fuchsia--oh my! We realize this party dress does make a statement, but, really, how can it not make you smile? Temper its fun-loving flashiness by pairing it with black tights and natural hair--or go full out Molly Ringwald-meets-Ungaro with an eye-catching clutch and vibrant hued heels. Either way you'll be sure to make a stylish statement wherever you RSVPed yes for the night!

6. Guess Amazed Platform Pumps ($99)
One by one, we've all been rocking crimson pumps around the office, so there's no debating that they're a serious must-have! Providing a welcome change from your basic black stilettos, rouge-colored shoes are great for accenting neutral basics. They also pack a powerful punch when paired with a pencil skirt and button-down, giving any outfit a sexy, come-hither twist.

7. J. Crew Glen Plaid Minnie Pants ($118)
Just like the snazzy pair spotted on Ungaro's runway, these cropped tweed pants are a lovely and surprising choice to pair with bold cocktail wear. We particularly admire their versatility, as the menswear fabric makes them appropriate for a day at the office, while the addition of a vivacious patterned top and pair of eye-catching mary-janes makes them entirely suitable for your night out on the town.

8. Bounkit Cat's Eye Earrings ($363)
These green onyx, citrine, and pink cat's eye earrings have an elegant, refined air we covet, while the unexpected color combination offers a decidedly current twist. Pair them with a low-bun to add polish to your every day wear, then style them with Ungaro-worthy waves and a cocktail dress for a subtly sexy soiree look.

9. Diane von Furstenberg Alphie Leather Jacket ($695) in Poison Green
We're totally having a colorful leather moment as of late and Diane von Furstenberg's leaf green iteration fulfills that flashy-hued craving like none other. Not only is the leather bomber clearly in keeping with Archs' electric palette, but the cropped style offers a flattering silhouette. Use it to spice up your daily denim or pair it with a black silk romper, lace-up booties, and a sleek clutch for seriously sizzling Girls' Night Out.--Liza Kaplan
