Every season there's a piece that drives fashion fanatics into a shopping frenzy. Right now, the must-have item is Balenciaga's terribly chic take on the schoolboy blazer. Nicolas Ghesquiere showed the snug, structured jacket with elaborate ethnic scarves, old-school jodhpurs, and platform sandal boots for fall's most exciting look. As such, the availability of the various Balenciaga blazers is slim to none, not to mention the significant price tag (they run from $2500 to $5500) makes them out of reach for most as well. Distress not, dear readers, as we have located a few alternatives that are equally as inspiring as the original.
J. Crew-that bastion of classic apparel-has a slightly preppy, perfectly constructed version, the Double-Faced Wool Lexington Jacket. We're showing the black blazer with contrasting white piping here, but the company also made two other options: Light gray with white trim and ivory with camel trim. ($250, jcrew.com)
If you'd like a pinstriped print instead of a solid, we'd like to direct you to the Lux Exeter Blazer, exclusive to Urban Outfitters. The exceptionally soft wool jacket hits at the waist and has a somewhat roomy cut, so go down a size if you desire a shrunken fit. It's available in the purple/black shown above, as well as gray/black. Lightweight yet oddly warm, this piece is particularly suitable for those in warmer climates. ($68, urbanoutfitters.com)
Finally, we pulled the Mirage Tuxedo Blazer from 3.1 Phillip Lim for an elegant variation of the look. Lim showed his cream wool jacket with black tipping at the same time the Balenciaga blazer came stomping down runways-apparently the designers were on the same page! We think it has a similar (albeit posh) spirit to the quirky coolness of today's subject. ($630, net-a-porter.com)
