How a 59-Year-Old French Icon Created the Ultimate Collab

Given that this spring marks the seventh season of Inès de la Fressange's collaboration with Uniqlo, it's clear that the 59-year-old French icon has struck a chord with the brand's customers. So why exactly is everyone so enamored with her? We went straight to the source and tapped Uniqlo's special projects design director, Naoki Takizawa, to get the scoop.

"The secret behind the success of Uniqlo's collaboration with this remarkable woman is that she is not a designer herself and participated in creating clothes from the perspective of a customer," he told Who What Wear. "Inès understands the essential desires of women around the world, the sort of clothes they need and wish for. Without the ego of a designer, she is able to share with women the essential items that make them look beautiful and tell them how to wear clothes to fit their individual style for any occasion."

While seasoned designers can bring their technical expertise into a collaboration, in de la Fressange's case, she used her "outsider" status to her advantage. How brilliant is that? While you'll have to wait until next month for the spring launch, we have a preview of the chic new wares below.
