Ways To Make A Turtleneck Look Cool

Call us crazy, but lately we’ve had our eyes on one of the season’s most tough-to-tackle tops: the turtleneck. Audacious, you say? Perhaps! This classic staple has graced the necks of countless style icons (think: Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie O), and we've found some equally amazing modern day inspiration to help get your turtleneck out of the closet and onto the streets!

We’ll take any excuse to channel Audrey Hepburn, which is why we gravitated toward the always simple-yet-stylish, Elin Kling.  Her Stella McCartney trousers and Tod’s loafers look ridiculously cute with that cropped Filippa K turtleneck.

The field jacket: no matter how simple or tricky an outfit may be, this outerwear must-have seems to polish off any look, including this oversized turtleneck.

    Olivia Palermo

We’re always curious to see how Olivia Palermo will tackle the latest trends, so we were understandably delighted when she hit the streets in this chunky knit turtleneck. The style star finished her look with black Westward Leaning sunglasses, Daryl K Leather Leggings ($795), a Givenchy Tote, and L.K. Bennett London by Caroline Issa Parrot Embroidered Point Toe Heels ($445)!

An all-black outfit is arguably the subtlest way to wear a turtleneck. Strand looked the part in her Zara knit, Lindex pants, Bruuns Bazaar beanie, Ray-Ban sunnies, and a secondhand blazer. Why not break the rules a little and finish the look off with a printed purse? Her cheetah print Hipsters for Sisters bag worked quite nicely, we think.

If ever there was a cool turtleneck, it is this one. We adore how Camille layered her Gap Turtleneck ($17) under a Mango Pinstripe Sweater ($70) and scrunched the sleeves. Those Club Monaco Wide-Leg Cropped Trousers ($298) don’t hurt, either.

As impressive as Blair Eadie’s layered look may be, we assure you, it’s all in the details! Our favorite detail, you ask? The way she styled a chunky cream Zara turtleneck sweater on top of a J.Crew Tissue Turtleneck ($45), of course! We’re also pretty fond of her distressed Current/Elliott Jeans ($206), Mark and Graham Cream Clutch ($79), and those strappy J.Crew heels.

  • Taylor Tomasi Hill

Ok, maybe this is cheating, but we had to include a mock turtleneck with the rest of the pack. Taylor Tomasi Hill wore a Delpozo Top ($600) with Mother of Pearl Printed Trousers ($525), and Alaia heels last month during NYFW, and we have to admit: sometimes less is more.

We like to call this the “Aloof Turtleneck” — the perfect combination of androgyny and model-off-duty.  Don’t you agree?

    Harley Viera Newton

Turtleneck + date night = contradicting ideas, you say? Not anymore, thanks to Harley Viera Newton’s ladylike interpretation in Vince’s Cable Turtleneck Sweater ($325). Simply take a page from her playbook and pair it with a black mini skirt, black accessories, and red beauty accents!

    Caroline Sieber

Yes, this is about making turtlenecks look cool, but did you know they could also be sexy? Case in point: Caroline Sieber, who paired a Uniqlo Turtleneck ($13) with a Celine Pre-Fall 13 peplum jacket, a mini skirt, and topped the ensemble off with thigh-high Chanel boots. The result is devastatingly alluring.

When the temperature drops, you'll go for the coziest of knits, but until then, why not try a stylish rendition of the sleeveless turtleneck? Our advice: pick up one in a neutral tone, and let the shape do the talking.

Tucked beneath a shift dress, a tissue thin turtleneck will keep you warm, and add a seemingly effortless layer to your outfit.

We’re quite keen on this ombre version of the turtleneck.

  • Tory Burch

‘Wren’ Merino Wool & Silk Turtleneck ($295)

We spotted Victoria’s Secret model, Jessica Hart in this turtleneck recently.  Reason enough to buy? We think so.
