It’s no coincidence that blogging mogul Leandra Medine chose to wear overalls on the cover of her debut book, Man Repeller. After all, utilitarian dungarees are practically the poster child of unflattering clothing, repelling men and women alike. Clearly the farmer favorite has a bit of a public image problem, so I thought it was the perfect subject for my next trend trial treatment. Read on for my styling tips on how to craft an overall look that is less down-home and more darling.
Overalls are inherently comfortable, so for my first look I wanted to embrace the causal feel. When dressing down dungarees, the main goal is to keep them from looking disheveled. My tip: pay attention to the details, like swapping flats for a heeled shoe (especially if you’re 5’4’’ like me) and making sure to wear a slim-fitting top.
Since overalls are generally looser fitting—and should be, unless you’re going for a roller disco look, which you’re not—heels are key for creating an outfit that is smart, not sloppy. A chunky heel is a comfortable choice and aligns with the daytime feel.
Since overalls are the ultimate casual piece, for my second look I wanted to take on the challenge of styling them for evening. The key to transforming denim coveralls is to pair them with decidedly dressy pieces such as a formal clutch and glitzy jacket.
