Life Skills 101: How To Tie A Tie (On Both You & Your Guy)

You may have the sartorial skills to clash prints or wear mismatched earrings, but what about the basics? Today we’re showing you how to master the menswear-inspired—and totally useful—art of tying ties.

    Step One

    Flip up collar and place tie around neck. (Make sure label is on the underside.) Adjust the tie, so that the wider side is 2/3 longer than the other. Important note: the shorter side of the tie should always be on your left.

    Step Two

    Wrap the longer end over the shorter piece twice.

    Step Three

    Thread the longer end up through the opening by the neck and down through the first loop that you made (when wrapping it around the shorter piece).

    Step Three

    Tighten the knot by pulling the longer part of the tie down and pushing the knot towards the collar. Flatten collar. The tie should hit at the top of the hip bone for women.
