If there’s one feeling pretty much every woman is universally familiar with, it’s the very particular kind of disappointment (and, sometimes, even horror) you feel when you see a photo of yourself that’s less than flattering. It’s happened to the best of us—it seems that the only living human incapable of taking a bad photograph is Beyoncé.
But that doesn’t mean help isn’t on its way! Aside from the tried-and-true advice once provided by your mother—“Chin up, shoulders back, smile!”—there’s a fairly simple technique involved in always taking a great picture. We caught up with celebrity stylist James Knox, the mastermind behind Iggy Azalea’s amazing red carpet looks, and he shared his wisdom.
“The most important thing is to truly know your body,” Knox says. “Don’t be in a fantasyland; it’s super important to know your body. I don’t care what type of body you have—trust me, there is clothing out there that you will look good in. If you know your body, you can package that body in the best way.”
So it all starts with wearing clothes that fit you properly—which certainly requires a level of honesty and directness that takes some time to achieve (and the ability to properly measure yourself!). But, Knox says, it’s about something much more internal and omnipresent than that.
“It’s more of a mental thing than a physical thing. When you look good, you feel good,” he says. “I think it all just translates. If you look in the mirror and you think ‘I’m killing it, I look good,’ that’s going to translate in every picture in the way you hold yourself, the way you walk, all of it. From that, everything else kind of falls into place.”
