The 1973 cult classic Badlands has all the makings of a thrilling Bonnie and Clyde-type story (think: criminal couple on a cross-country killing spree) combined with the fashion sensibilities of Rebel Without A Cause (a.k.a. classic denim, ‘50s-inspired full skirts, and loafers). In short: it’s amazing, and the perfect subject for this month’s Currently Channeling.

The Terrence Malick-directed flick takes place in the late ‘50s and follows Holly (Sissy Spacek), a teenager living in South Dakota, who meets and falls in love with a young rebel named Kit (Martin Sheen). Blind to Kit’s sociopath ways, Holly joins him on his rampant murdering spree across the country. Like Holly’s signature style—a mix of James-Dean inspired denim and crisp button-ups—the F/W 13 runways were filled with plenty of boy-meets-girl appeal, including DKNY’s Spray Indigo Cotton Oversize Cropped Boxy Denim Jacket ($188, 800.231.0884) and Chloe’s button-front, ruffle dress.

Our favorite Badlands moment, you ask? When Kit and Holly dance out infront of their treehouse in the woods. For all of the spontaneous dance moments in your life, this portable record player is a must.

If we’re going to go the tomboy route, we’re taking cues from Holly and pairing this chambray shirt with dark-wash jeans for denim-on-denim perfection.

Boy Jeans ($235)
True blue denim played a big supporting role in the film, with both Holly and Kit sporting their own versions of the straight-leg jean. A.P.C.’s Boy Jeans make a stellar of-the-moment substitute.

Ruffle-Front Organza Blouse ($495)
It’s not all oxford shirts and blue jeans for Holly. The teen had her fair share of girly moments too, which is why we imagine she’d appreciate this ruffle-front organza blouse by Red Valentino.

Thanks to Holly, the white sock is making a comeback—or at least becoming our favorite new thing to wear with penny loafers!

The Jean Jacket ($118) in Storm Cloud Wash
This denim jacket is our nod to Kit’s bad boy style, and also happens to be our favorite transitional layering piece too.

Pique Shorts ($40)
Tailored white shorts, like the pair Holly wore while twirling a baton in her front yard, ring of preppy summer style. Wear them now with a bright tee, then swap in a fitted navy sweater after Labor Day.
