White Shoes

White Shoes
Thursday, May, 24, 2012 Take a quick look at your shoe collection, dear readers, and you'll likely find a sea of black, brown, and neutral heels. It's easy to play it safe when it comes to footwear, but this spring and summer, a number of stylesetters have inspired us to refresh our wardrobes with a pair of striking white kicks! Lest you think that white shoes aren't a very versatile option, today we're presenting you with six savvy dressers and showing you exactly How They Wear this white-hot trend. On The Street/Bold Looks
As tastemakers like Solange Knowles, Poppy Delevingne, and Emily Weiss recently demonstrated, a pair of sleek white shoes is perfect for offsetting busy, intricate prints! Back in January, Knowles arrived at an Alberta Ferretti event in Milan wearing the label's patterned coat and blue frock from the F/W 11 collection. But it was her Mary Jane t-strap pumps, also by the Italian fashion house, that injected her quirky ensemble with a dose of edge and helped elevate her overall look! A month later in London at the Elle Style Awards, Delevingne opted to team Mary Katrantzou for Topshop's floral dress with Usula Mascaro for Zoe Jordan lace-up Shoes ($395, 020.7493.8224). The model/socialite's unique styling choice offers a fresh alternative to typical nude-colored heels, ensuring that her entire head-to-toe look is on-point. We also must point out Into The Gloss beauty editor Weiss, who turned up at Balmain's dinner with Olivier Rousteing in New York wearing Altuzarra's Print Long Sleeve Tee ($350, 212.206.1272) and Indian Print A-line Flared Skirt ($960, 888.774.2424), both from F/W 12. Weiss effectively balanced out the vivid clashing patterns of her top and skirt with Alexander Wang's Joan Mule Pumps ($545) in White (Rihanna's also a fan of these sleek shoes)! Though Weiss' outfit is polished and feminine, her pointy-toe heels, with a chic ankle-strap and subtle cutouts, lend a slightly edgy feel.

On The Street/Subtle Looks
Of course, if your style sensibilities veer toward a simpler, more pared-down aesthetic, white shoes will suit you perfectly as well! Just take Emma Roberts' casual-yet-chic ensemble when she was photographed in Los Angeles in April. Her basic StyleMint t-shirt teamed with Isabel Marant's cropped pants from the Pre-Fall 12 collection is a straightforward pairing, but the addition of two standout accessories--namely an Edie Parker clutch and Elizabeth and James' Stela Heels ($375) in Cream Multi--boosts her outfit with sophisticated appeal! Sarah Jessica Parker's on-the-go look as she left her apartment building in New York last month is another example of sartorially savvy styling. The actress sported Theyskens' Theory's Jotor Nota Jacket ($995) from Resort 11 (which is sadly no longer available, though the label's Jose Leather Jacket ($995) is a similar alternative) with a J. Crew pink cardigan, Roseanna Rosy Distressed Corduroy Pants ($575, 212.925.1200), and Chanel quilted purse. We're especially fond of how Parker slipped into Repetto's Camille Mid Heel Ballerina Shoes ($270) in White (available here in black) as a bold finishing touch to her look. The ballerina-style slip-ons offer a feminine counterpoint to Parker's tough leather jacket, plus their short heels make them a comfortable footwear option! If you want a slightly dressier outfit, you simply must refer to Diane Kruger, who wore Calvin Klein Collection's Carmine Knotted Silk Embroidery Open Back Dress (price upon request, 212.292.9000) and Silver Metal Box Clutch (price upon request, 212.292.9000) at an event during the 65th Cannes Film Festival last week. The actress' strappy Givenchy sandals complement her coral midi dress perfectly, resulting in a lovely ladylike look!

On You/Bold Looks
Whether you're itching to try this trend or think it's all just white noise, we can assure you that white shoes are easily incorporated into your everyday wear! We've gathered up a handful of investment-worthy pieces and budget-friendly picks to help you achieve a totally chic look. Bold trendsetters with a penchant for prints can channel Solange's polished coat and dress combo by finding the perfect patterned cover-up, such as Burberry Prorsum's Printed Trench Style Coat ($3379), Marni's Patterned Wool Coat ($543), or Forever 21's Satin Polka Dot Trench ($40), and a high-neck dress, like McQ by Alexander McQueen's Draped Panel Dress ($269). Then you'll simply need a pair of white Mary Jane-style shoes to complete your outfit. We suggest Renatta Jop's Closed-Toe Slip-Ons ($175) or Pleaser's Women's Cutiepie Mary Jane Pumps ($63). Or, you can opt for Delevingne's youthful, girly look by mixing a floral number with lace-up wedges. Swathed in a vibrant flowery print, Mary Katrantzou's Floral Bustier Dress ($1831), Theory's Achi Floral Print Silk Dress ($315), and Suzi Chin for Maggy Boutique's Sleeveless Floral Print Dress ($148) are all lovely dress selections, while Cole Haan's Minka Wedge Sandals ($328) and Lovely People's Derris Lace-Up Wedge Sandals ($45) in Natural are fab alternatives to Delevingne's on-trend shoes. Though they're not lace-up heels, See by Chloe's Wooden Platform Sandals ($380) have a cool peep-toe and chunky heel that would pair nicely with a floral frock too! If you'd rather stick with more abstract patterns, a la Weiss, BCBGMAXAZRIA's Zotia Printed Dress ($138), Rebecca Minkoff's Linda Print Dress ($398), and Saloni's Alexia Dress ($598) in Ikat Print exude the beauty editor's ladylike vibe. Just make sure to balance it out with a sharp pair of white heels, such as Alexander Wang's Danica Woven Heels ($595) or ASOS' Sienna Leather Point Court Shoes With Cross Strap ($118). Both shoes feature plenty of edgy cutout detailing that we're sure Weiss would appreciate!

On You/Subtle Looks
For a more understated vibe, you may want to emulate Roberts' cool, down-to-earth attire. We recommend Vila's Linen Blend Loose Fit T-Shirt ($35), Mango's Cropped Trousers ($60) in Navy, and Pleaser's Milan 1 Pumps ($50) in White Patent; each piece is quite affordable, and when worn together, gives you the actress' relaxed look without breaking the bank! You could also aim for a downtown chic outfit like Parker by teaming a leather jacket (Doma's Goat Zip Out Hood Jacket ($598) or Free People's Cropped Faux Leather Motorcycle Jacket ($150)) and casual corduroy pants (Loft's Modern Straight Leg Corduroy Pants ($13) in Soft Seashell) with white ballet shoes. Topshop's Koko Soft Leather Ballet Shoes ($80) and Francesco Milano's Ballet Flats ($45) in White feature the same pretty bow detailing and rounded toe as Parker's pair! Finally, if you're itching to try Kruger's ladylike look, start with a midi dress in a similar coral hue, like Miss Selfridge's Cut Out Back Midi Dress ($74) or Dorothy Perkins' Coral Strappy Midi Dress ($35). Finish off the ensemble with ankle-strap shoes; whether you choose one with a shorter kitten heel like Nine West's Women's Onboard Ankle-Strap Sandals ($79) in White/Light Natural or a taller one like Tory Burch's Open Toe Sandal ($382), a sleek white heel will do the trick--and leave you looking white-hot!--Tiffany Tse
