Pastels

Pastels
Wednesday, March, 21, 2012 Like clockwork every spring, sweet pastel shades, from sky blue to mint green to lavender, emerge as a front-runner trend among in-the-know stylephiles. And although girly girls typically favor the pretty Easter egg-inspired colors, we recently noticed an array of tastemakers wearing pastels in a slightly edgier--and totally refreshing--way! In honor of the first official day of spring, which was yesterday, we rounded up a few stunning examples to show you just How They Wear this lovely seasonal trend.

Since there's still a chill in the air come spring, finding a standout outerwear option is key to achieving the perfect pastel-colored ensemble. Both Sarah Jessica Parker and Hanneli Mustaparta gravitated towards dusky blue coats to keep them warm and stylish! At the Louis Vuitton F/W 12 show in Paris just a few weeks ago, Parker turned up in the label's white lace dress and blue coat (the former is from the S/S 05 collection and the latter from S/S 03, so sadly, both are no longer available). While these two pieces afford her look with ladylike sophistication, Parker's well-chosen accessories, like white gloves and Louis Vuitton's sleek Merry Go Round Pumps ($1056, 866.884.8866) in White Calf Leather, provide fashion-forward flair. The actress even allowed her black bra to peek through the lace dress, injecting her feminine outfit with a dose of provocative edge. We also love the way Mustaparta styled her Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Mohair Coat With Patch Pockets ($1650) from the F/W 11 collection. At the Derek Lam F/W 12 show in New York in mid-February, she expertly layered her fuzzy coat over a cream sweater, Tibi's white leather jacket, and Rag & Bone's Skinny Pants ($176, 212.278.8214) in Winter White Corduroy. The model/blogger has a skilled eye for mixing different textures (mohair and leather) and colors (varying off-white shades) together. Topped off with an intricate Proenza Schouler necklace from the F/W 11 collection and a pair of black slippers, Mustaparta's outfit is chic and cozy.

Though Parker and Mustaparta's pale blue coats are very much on-trend, we're fond of outerwear in other pastel hues as well. Take, for instance, Dakota Fanning's boxy Simone Blazer ($560) in Blushed from the F/W 11 collection. Spotted out in New York last month, the actress paired the jacket with Acne's Ry Angora Knit Sweater ($250) from the Resort 12 collection and Equipment's Daddy One Pocket Jewel Tip Collar Shirt ($546). Fanning's black pants and boots offer an edgy counterpoint to the sweet combo of pale pink and mint green. For a casual preppy take on pastels, we adore Fearne Cotton's look. The British TV/radio presenter braved a drizzle in London last month as she was leaving BBC Radio Studios in a ruffled beige coat, blue jeans, and Topshop's pink cable knit sweater. A bright green headband and cool pink shades serve as retro-inspired accents and further enhance Cotton's polished ensemble!

If, however, you're interested in pastels that have little to do with outerwear, look no further than Laura Bailey and Lily Collins. Bailey was spotted at London Fashion Week in late February sporting a pale pink outfit that was anything but demure! The model wore Balenciaga's white cardigan over Christopher Kane's S/S 12 embellished shirt. The flashy top, with its attention-grabbing sparkle, gets toned down with Sessun's cuffed trousers and Miu Miu's brown heels from the S/S 10 collection. Bailey also accessorized with oversized Chanel sunglasses and a rose pink Radley Goldington Patent Clutch ($109) to complete her uptown-meets-downtown getup. Meanwhile, Collins attended the Marni at H&M collection launch in Los Angeles last month in head-to-toe Marni S/S 12. The actress donned the label's Pleated Sheath Dress ($945), but smartly grounded the dainty, cutesy frock with a cool white clutch and studded Mary Jane pumps.

If dwelling on pastels has got you ready to take on the seasonal trend, we've got you covered with a variety of affordable (and some indulgent) options! If you're in need of pastel outerwear, take a look at Calvin Klein's Vintage Trench Coat ($190), Vanessa Bruno's Cotton And Linen-Blend Coat ($205), or Valentino's Roma Polka-Dot Wool And Silk-Blend Coat ($499), all in suitable shades of cool blue. You can channel Parker's ladylike look in Sue Wong's Battenburg Lace Short Dress ($335) or Aidan Mattox's Niteline Cowl-Neck Lace Dress ($375), or vie for Mustaparta's dressed-down vibe in Lauren by Ralph Lauren's Slimming Classic Straight Corduroy Pants ($40) or Christopher Blue's Silverton Cigarette Land O Lakes Cord ($65). For those wishing to emulate Fanning's blazer-and-sweater outfit, check out Topshop's Co-Ord Fluid Blazer ($120) and Halogen's Textured Long Sleeve Sweater ($40) in Green Celadon for the perfect pink and mint green color combo. You can also mimic Cotton's preppy ensemble in Tommy Hilfiger's Jenny Long Sleeve Solid Cable Knit Sweater ($40) in New Ballerina Pink, worn underneath Vince Camuto's Ruffle Front Trench Taupe ($108) or, for those willing to shell out a little more, Red Valentino's Ruffled Trench Coat ($866). However, if you want to venture away from outerwear, derive inspiration from Bailey's unique getup and sport ASOS' Shell Top With Floret Embellishment ($44) and J.Crew's Perfect-Fit Mixed-Tape Cardigan ($25) in White with either Rugby Ralph Lauren's Slim Boyfriend Chino ($80) in Pink or SESSUN's Causal Pants ($105), two pink trouser options which would make Bailey proud! If you love Collins' sweet little number, as we do, check out Paul by Paul Smith's Short Dress ($158), See by Chloe's Denim Bustier Babydoll Dress ($295), and Marni's Textured Silk Dress ($436). All three frocks serve as lovely alternatives to Collins' pastel dress--just don't forget to wear yours with edgy accents for the actress' cool-girl panache. And of course, whatever pastel look you choose, make sure to pas-tell us all about it!--Tiffany Tse
