We're not the least bit surprised that leather skirts have become an imperative part of the most fashionable closets. Who can resist an article of clothing that is both universally appealing (they're tough, sexy, and feminine all at the same time) and endlessly versatile? Certainly not us! Leather skirts are an investment-worthy item for sure, and, thanks to a myriad of silhouettes and gorgeous fall colors, have officially rendered themselves a fresh choice for fall!
Picking up a leather skirt is easy, but knowing how to wear it can be tricky! After all, you don't want to look like a biker bar regular or a dominatrix, right? Fortunately, the options are endless, and we've got a handful of smart outfit ideas to prove it! One suggestion is to tone down the skirt's inherent sexiness by pairing it with a polished piece like a prim, silky blouse. The result is feminine and sophisticated, as evidenced by one stylish civilian we spotted on Stockholm Streetstyle (top row, center). By teaming her black leather pleated mini skirt with a chic green button-up, peep-toe heels, and a mini bag, she created an ensemble that's perfect for date night or a low-key cocktail party.
On the opposite end of the styling spectrum, we also approve of Liv Tyler's downtown take on the trend, which speaks brilliantly to the leather skirt's cool, tough-girl vibe. The actress and October Style Spotlight star selected Stella McCartney's sleek Faux Leather Pencil Skirt ($515) for her appearance at said designer's F/W 11 show in Paris earlier this year, and we have to commend her decision to juxtapose the skirt's secretary-gone-bad spirit with a sporty varsity jacket. British model Suki Waterhouse also opted to combine a leather skirt with casual outerwear recently. For a Reebok party in London a few months ago, Waterhouse styled a leather mini skirt with a white t-shirt, black and white checked coat, and taupe suede ankle booties. The result is more casual and youthful than Tyler's ensemble, but is equally on-point and stylish!
While we love the classic look of a black leather skirt, we have to admit it looks equally lovely in fall's rich hues, as Rose Byrne and Karolina Kurkova recently showed us. Not only did both ladies select colored leather skirts for their evening attire, but they also created high-impact looks with a mix of intriguing textures. Byrne gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "leather and lace" at the W Hotel's Symmetry Concert in Miami back in July, when she paired Zimmermann's Idyllic White Guipure Shirt ($1200) with the Australian brand's yellow Halcyon Flip Skirt ($775) and Nicholas Kirkwood shoes. (Check out the designer's Lace-Up Platform Sandals ($1195) for a similar style.) The combination of the summery top with the fall skirt makes for a smart transitional look. A few months later at the Aigner shop re-opening in Germany, Kurkova assembled a flashbulb-worthy ensemble consisting of Derek Lam's gold metallic Neck Tie Blouse ($1490), a chocolate brown leather skirt by Aigner, and Dior heels. We love how the lustrous top complements the skirt's luxurious look, and think it would make for an excellent outfit for any holiday soiree.
Now that we've shown you a number of ways to wear a leather skirt, it's time to fill your closet with some chic options to try this season! If you're searching for a classic black skirt, definitely pick up Joie's Inga Durango Leather Skirt ($328), which has a flirtatious a-line silhouette, or Tracy Reese's Black Leather Pencil Skirt ($495) if you prefer a slimmer style. We're also obsessed with the retro spirit of Leith's Leather Midi Skirt ($328), which is perfect for all your ladylike ensembles. Want to try a non-noir option a la Byrne and Kurkova? Don't hesitate to check out See by Chloe's Leather Mini Skirt ($454) in Rust Brown, A.L.C.'s Leather Skirt ($454) in Bordeaux, or Madewell's Leather Belltoll Skirt ($298) in Warm Cinnamon. Fortunately, there are a number of inexpensive options on the market now too, including Free People's Vegan Leather Pleated Skirt ($148), River Island's Gold Leather Mini Skirt ($126), and A|Wear's 2 Tone Pu Skirt ($72). Whatever skirt or skirts you decided to pick up, just make sure to keep each of today's well-appointed looks in mind when you're styling this wardrobe essential!-Jessica Baker
