How do I style a sweatshirt in a chic way?

While a classic sweatshirt should still be part of your cozy weekend wear, when styled correctly, it can be both strikingly chic and contagiously cool for everything from work to a night out on the town. Here are a few ways to elevate this terry treasure.

Must-Try Look #1: Layered Lady
Pair an uber-feminine skirt—either a knee-length pencil or a circle skirt that hits at your natural waist—with a more fitted button-up. Think: a plaid or polka dot top with a sweet collar. Throw a little shrunken crewneck sweatshirt over the button-up and pull out the collar (you want it to show). Wear with a sexy little heel and clutch, and be both the best dressed at the office and at after-work drinks.

Must-Try Look #2: Totally Tomboy
Wear a crewneck sweatshirt (perhaps a printed one!) with a baggy trouser that is either slightly tapered or ridiculously oversized. Irony is key—you’re really embracing the borrowed-from-the-boys look. That said, you’re still a girl, so to make this work, be sure to choose a pant in a dressier fabric. Push your sweatshirt’s sleeves up, and then add pointy heels and some fancy, dainty jewelry to finish the outfit.

Must-Try Look #3: A Rougher Edge
Pull out your best leather pants/leggings in black, oxblood, or forest green, and pair them with a heather gray pullover. Wear a fistful of gems around your neck and perhaps some caged heels to really nail this tough-but-cool-girl combo.

Must-Try Look #4: Dress it Down
Change up your early fall wardrobe by wearing your easy floral dresses with gladiator sandals and a sweatshirt hoodie as your "third piece." This look is charming for grabbing coffee with a friend or quick jaunts to the farmers markets.
